Nach den Pogromen von 1938 emigriert sie nach Norwegen und befreundet sich dort eng mit der Dichterin Gunvor Hofmo. 1940 besetzen deutsche Truppen Norwegen, 1942 wird Ruth Maier nach Auschwitz deportiert, wo man sie sofort ermordet. Gunvor Hofmo hob die Tagebücher sowie literarische Texte und Zeichnungen Ruth Maiers jahrzehntelang auf. Jan Erik Vold veröffentlichte sie schließlich in norwegischer Übersetzung aus ihrem Nachlass.
