Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+. Second Revised Edition. Very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. Scholars' bookplate to inner cover (Slater & Dunbabin).; Loeb Classical Library No. 225; 432 pages; This volume collects some of the liveliest examples of Greek literary portraiture. The Characters of Theophrastus sketches thirty hypothetical men, each dominated by a single fault, such as rudeness, superstitution, or greed. Unassuming in style, the sketches nonetheless bear resemblance on the one hand to Aristotle's account of faults and virtues and on the other to the vivid figures of Menandrian New Comedy. This new text and translation by Jeffrey Rusten is based on the most recent scholarship. Herodas flourished in the 270s and 260s--the high point of Hellenistic poetry. His poems are choliambic mimes, dramatic dialogues that depict characters in everyday urban settings and situations. I. C. Cunningham presents a new translation of Herodas, based on his Teubner text. Also included here, in a reprint of the earlier Loeb edition by A. D. Knox, are the fragments of Greek poetry in the choliambic meter--especially those which offer a tantalizing glimpse into the raucous and sordid world of Hipponax--and the lyric iambics on themes of Cynic philosophy by Cercidas.…

Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. p. 97-112. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Author's name underlined, copy double folded, otherwse clean. - From the text: The crossroads where Oedipus killed Laius - not really a crossroads in the common English sense of the word cross, but triple roads (triplai amaxitoí), the junction of three roads (tríodos) or, most frequently, a split/cracked/forked road (schistí ódós) - is first mentioned at Oedipus Tyrannus 716. Most commentaries have so little to say on it that Stephen Halliwell has called the crossroads a neglected detail in the play. In one sense it is the fate of crossroads to be neglected not only by commentators, but also - until too late - by the plays characters. But at the same time, the circumstances of its existence seem almost to compel readers to seek many different kinds of significance for it. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.…

Cloth with dustjacket. Zustand: Gut. XXIII, 219 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag berieben, sonst sehr guter Zustand / dust jacket rubbed, otherwise very good condition. - Mabel Lang's distinguished contributions to Bronze Age and Classical archaeology were matched by sensitive and original studies of Greek historical writing. Her Martin Classical Lectures on Herodotus were published in 1984,- this volume collects her articles on Thucydides and adds substantial previously unpublished material on Thucydidean thought-patterns, adaptations of Herodotean structure, and the importance of indirect speeches in his history. The assembled papers are an important complement to Mabel Lang's pathbreaking study of Herodotean narrative. Together with introductory and biographical essays by Jeffrey Rusten and Eleanor Dickey, and Miss Lang's distinguished longtime colleague Mary Patterson McPherson, these papers will enable students of historiography in general to obtain a better understanding of how Thucydides engaged his audience. Although they were written over many years, the papers share a consistency of insight that makes them continually relevant to all who endeavor to understand the literary art of Thucydides. / CONTENTS Acknowledgments Jeffrey Rusten and Richard Hamilton Foreword Mary Patterson McPherson Mabel Lang on Thucydides Jeffrey Rusten Part One Narrative 1 Participial Motivation in Thucydides Narrative Inconsistencies Internal and External 2 A Note on Ithome 3 Kylonian Conspiracy 4 Scapegoat Pausanias 5 The Murder of Hipparchus 6 Alcibiades vs. Phrynichus Narrative Structure and Historical Interpretation 7 Thucydides and the Epidamnian Affair 8 The Revolution of the 400 9 Revolution of the 400: Chronology and Constitutions Part Two Discourse Thucydidean Thought-Patterns 10 Thucydidean Thought 11 Thucydides as Speech-Writer Herodotean Inheritances and Adaptations 12 Thucydides, First Person 13 The Thucydidean Tetralogy (1.67-88) 14 The Paired Speeches of the Corinthians (1.120-24) and Pericles (1.140-44) and the Stories They Enclose 15 Necessary for Whom? Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The second book of Thucydides' history is of particular literary interest, containing as it does such important sections as the funeral oration, the account of the plague at Athens and the obituary of Pericles. Professor Rusten's commentary aims to assist the students to learn to read Thucydides. It scrutinises not only the standard historical context but also the literary and philosophical one, and devotes special attention to the exceptionally complex structures and techniques of language which make Thucydides the most difficult as well as most profound of ancient historians. The introduction surveys biographical interpretations of the text, suggests a new approach to fictive elements in the speeches, and sketches the chief features of Thucydidean style. This edition is intended primarily as a textbook for undergraduates and students in the upper forms of schools (both introduction and commentary are meant to be accessible even to less advanced students of Greek), but any Greek scholar will find it rewarding.…
