Two very scarce papers submitted to the Institution of Civil Engineers regarding the Gezira Irrigation scheme, and published by the Institution in 1929, along with the minutes from their discussions on these papers. Rebound in paper wraps, and without the original title page.The first paper present is Harmood Victor Carruthers Johnstone's 'The Gezira Irrigation Scheme: Canalization of the Gezira', in which he discusses the climate, opportunities for growing crops, local population, construction and control of water.The second paper is James Robertson Russell's 'Sluices and Machinery of the Gezira Irrigation Scheme: Blue Nile Dam and Canalization', in which he discusses the erection of the dam, the sluice-frame, and the machinery needed to operate this.To the rear of the work are two large folding plates of technical diagrams, one for each paper.The Gezira Scheme, one of the world's largest irrigation projects, was started by the British while the area was governed as a part of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. It involves water from the Blue Nile being distributed through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers, for the purposes of growing cotton.From the library of Frederic Newhouse (1883-1969), sometime inspector-general of Egyptian irrigation in the Sudan, and with his contemporary inscription to the head of the front wrap, dated 1945.
