1p., 4to. In good condition, on lightly aged and creased paper. With Royal Society stamp of acknowledgement. Written on behalf of Crouch, who is 'desirious of securing recognition by the R.S.A.', and who has 'supplied us with many designs of high artistic merit or many years and has made a considerable contribution to theh success of our fine art productions.' He praises the 'originality of design and the high artistic merit of his work', and considers that 'his work for industrial art deserves the highest recognition', being 'easily recognizable' and in a 'style distinctly his own'. The letter also contains the interesting reference to the firm's 'efforts in securing fine art work formerly done by Germany even since 1918'.

After serving in the Great War, Burn (son of Sir Joseph Burn) studied at the Slade between 1918 and 1922, winning six prizes. After teaching in London at the Royal College, and in Boston, he offered his services to the war effort. After the war he went back to the Royal College, as a senior tutor. The four ot the items here are in fair condition, lightly worn and discoloured. Each is folded once for postage. Although only one is dated, the others appear to date from around the same time. ONE ('Monday'): 1p, 4to. Unsigned. Arranging for Lawrence to visit his studio: 'We will show you what we have got in the way of oil sketches but I rather doubt if there is any thing very suitable, however come and see.' TWO (21 July [1928?]): 2pp, 12mo. He has written to 'Guthrie', to say that Lawrence is going to visit. 'I will keep the sketch that I am working on for you at £10. I am sure it will be a masterpiece.' In a postscript he announces that he is 'going away to morrow with my Father for a week and I will tell him about your nephue [sic] then.' THREE (10 September 1928): 2pp, 4to. He has finished working from Lawrence's sketch and will be sending the painting. 'You said at the N.E.A.C. when I saw you last that you would be interested to see the larger picture of the same subject'. He renews his invitation to the sudio, as it would be safer for Lawrence to 'take the sketch away'. He has 'got quite a number of new things' to show Lawrence, and is 'now the proud possessor of a morris Car'. Regarding the future Sir Augustus Moore Daniel (1866-1950) he writes: 'What good news about Mr Daniel being made director of the National Gallery? We must all prepare lists of pictures to be taken from the walls & lists of pictures to take their places. I wrote to him with the suggestion but he replied that he had no intention of being a new broom.' FOUR (5 February [1929?]): 2pp, 12mo. He begins by thanking him for the cheque for ten pounds. He did not go 'to the sale of Marchants pictures': 'fortunately he had not got any of mine as I expect they would have gone for a penny or so'. He ends with news of his wife's health. (Burn was married to the sculptor Dorothy Sharwood Smith.).

She is enclosing 'a few specimens of the 'blue paper' which I have found so efficacious - If you put the corner of the paper to a candle it will immediately burn like 'touch paper'. She gives advice regarding the paper, whose smoke 'burnt [?] round the patie nt, gives great relief in asthma or bad cough'. After the valediction she gives 'the simple receipt', covering nineteen lines, in which the paper is named as 'lace paper'.

All three letters 12mo: the first of three pages, and the last two one page apiece. Texts clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Letter One: Sir Henry Vansittart Neale will be pleased to allow Grundy 'a look at his pictures' at Bisham Abbey. Gives directions. Discusses Grundy's letter in the Daily Express, complaining about the 'crowding out' of pictures at the Royal Academy. He considers it 'no new thing: there was a very violent outcry of the same kind some forty years ago and about that time several exhibitions were organised of pictures which had been accepted and not hung [.] My quarrel with the present Academy show is not so much that it is too much cut down as that it is very badly selected [.]'. Letter Two: He is pleased that the Bisham Abbey visit has been 'fixed up', and would like 'to have a talk with you on the Academy question'. Letter Three: Explaining why the statement 'from 1768 to 1805 the Royal Academy was the sole exhibiting society of British artists' is 'all wrong'. Concludes: 'So apparently the only period during which the Academy was the sold exhibiting society was between 1791 and 1805, when the R. W. S. began'.

4pp., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper. He gives his 'best thanks' for his correspondent's 'watchful kindness'. As his 'acquaintance with Academicians is very limited', he has 'not yet solicited any one to propose me at the R.A.', and he 'would gladly accept Mr. E. M. Ward's obliging offer - and think Mr. G. D. Leslie or Mr Dobson would second me'. He made 'such a mistake' the previous evening, by going to the Vestry Hall, Chelsea. He found, 'on reading the circular again how I had erred'. He regrets 'to have lost the pleasure of hearing you read Sir Jasper - | Another regret not unmixed with shame is that the design for Mrs S. C. Hall's tales is not yet complete but in a few days I will send it.' Hall's 'Trial of Sir Jasper: A Temperance Tale in Verse' was published in 1873.
