Saarinen House, the home of Finnish-American architect and designer Eliel Saarinen and textile designer Loja Saarinen at Cranbrook Academy of Art, the graduate school in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is an important 1920s American house and the site of a dramatic garden. This book documents the history and diverse design elements of the house and garden, which have been recently restored. The house is Saarinen's expression of his belief that life and art are inextricably bound within a framework that encompasses all realms of design. The photographs document the results of the restoration of the residence: the original layout and colour schemes, Loja's textiles, long-lost furnishings, and the garden. 176 pages : illustrations (some color) ; 30 cm. Burgundy cloth boards, unclipped dust jacket. Slight shelf wear to edges, no inscriptions, tight and square binding. Photographs available on request. Stapled Printed Wrappers. Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition 1/3000. np (22pp), 15 b&w illustrations. With an exhibition checklist, bibliography, biography and exhibition history. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the slender catalogue issued in conjunction with Anthony Hernandez' participation as part of the 1976 Bicentennial project "The Nation's Capital in Photographs". Eight eminent American photographers (Lewis Baltz, Joe Cameron, Robert Cumming, Roy DeCarava, Lee Friedlander, John Gossage, Jan Groover, and Hernandez) were commissioned by The Corcoran Gallery of Art to "spend extended periods in Washington D.C. during 1975-76 to photograph the city, its environs and people, as each was guided by his own vision". The resulting exhibitions ultimately produced eight individual catalogues sampling each artist's photographs. A most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon item additionally SIGNED "Anthony Hernandez" in black ink on the title page. Signed by the Photographer. Photography Monograph.
