Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 2nd Edition. Very good condition hardback book with very good dustjacket. 82 pages with 28 figures & 4 maps 2 Appendixes with many colour and black & white plates This book weighs 2 kg, so extra postage may be required depending on the destination. Deals with the dating and identification of south east asian ceramics. Foreword by William Willetts. The mainland region of Southeast Asia has a rich, indigenous tradition of ancient ceramic production with centers in the modern nations of Cambodia, Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos), Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and Vietnam. The main output was ware for domestic and ritualistic use and regional trade. The insular Southeast Asian region (Brunei, East Timor Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore) made only utilitarian earthenware such as cooking and storage vessels for foods and liquids. It did, though, import trade ceramics from the mainland, China, and Japan beginning in the fourteenth century.

Bookseller sticker glued to the rear of the back cover top left side.; Catalogue from an exhibition presented by The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and The Urban Council, Hong Kong, January 26 to April 2, 1979, at the Hong Kong Museum of Art.; "The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong first came into existence in 1974, and this is the third exhibition mounted in Hong Kong by the society and the second to be held in the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The exhibition on this occasion is devoted to Chinese and South-East Asian ceramics, mainly of the varieties used as trade wares in centuries past.Sir John Addis has honoured the society by writing the introduction to the Chinese ceramics section of the exhibition, which has been supplemented by essays on specific subjects by Dr Ip Yee, Dr Adrian Joseph, Dr Philip Wen-chee Mao and myself; and Roxanna M. Brown has generously consented to write the introduction to the South-East Asian wares section. Sir John's encouragement of the society from its beginnings has been most welcome, and we are particularly pleased that both he and Ms Brown should consent to write introductions in view of their well-known expertise in many of the types of ceramics included. Considerable advances have been made over the past ten years in our understanding of the types of wares exhibited as a result partly of excavations in many parts of South-East Asia and elsewhere notably of the shipwrecks off the coast of South Korea at Sinan and in the Gulf of Siam and partly from an intensive study of the wares themselves. Since the Manila Trade Pottery Seminar of 1968 numerous exhibitions of trade wares have been organized in many parts of the world, and a symposium was held recently at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during which provenances and dates were suggested for whole classes of early Sung ceramics, thus adding considerably to our knowledge of the wares of this early period. It is hoped that this exhibition will give new stimulus to interest in the subject and provide new collectors with a basic knowledge of the types of wares which can occasionally still be found today in the markets of South-East Asia. The diverse pieces being shown have been drawn almost without exception from Hong Kong collections and whilst the exhibition does not pretend to be comprehensive, examples are included of most of the main types of ceramic wares commonly traded in the Far East in the period prior to 1660." excerpt from the foreword by Brian S. McElney, President, The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, September 1978.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 2nd Edition. English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 21 x 28 cm; 1.333 kg; 272 pages including 69 figures, 6 maps, 274 black-and-white illustrations and 207 colour illustrations.; Used book in very good condition. Minor signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior as new.; When the first edition of this book was published in 1977, it was hoped that it would play a part in reviving a serious interest in the ceramics of South-East Asia. Happily, this proved to be the case: books have subsequently appeared in English devoted to Khmer, Vietnamese, Sukhotai/Sawankhlalok, and northern Thai wares, and in Japanese and Thai, to Thai ceramics generally; a bibliography of works on old glazed Burmese ceramics is growing; dozens of articles have been published on various aspects of new research; and underwater archaeology concentrating on shiwrecks containing ceramics has flourished. Recent progress in original research and discovery can be summarized into four areas of major importance: first, the identification of Guangdong ceramics as the missing link between the wares of China and those of both Vietnam and Kampuchea; secondly, the unexpected discovery of burial sites in the hills of western Thailand, which contained examples of northern Thai wares rarely seen previously; thirdly, the discovery of Burmese glazed ceramics; and finally, new findings from excavations at the Sawankhalok klin site. In the second edition of the Ceramics of South-East Asia, the author takes into full account the developments in the last decade to bring her original study up to date, and also takes the opportunity to revise the text where this seemed necessary. In addition, a large number of new illustrations, both in colour and black and white, have been included, together with new line drawings and maps. The outcome is virtually a new book, completely reset and illustrated.
