First editions of this collection of pamphlets. George Orwell edited and contributed the introduction to volume I, which was published in November 1948. His death in January 1950 led to A. J. P. Orwell and Taylor also provided introductions to volumes I and II, where the former wrote "it is necessary that people should once again become aware of the possibilities of the pamphlet as a means of influencing opinion" (p. 16).
