Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Modern Dance of Death by Peyton Rous was originally delivered as the Linacre lecture for the year 1929 at the University of Cambridge. The purpose of the lecture was to discuss the manner in which humankind's relationship to physical ailments and the attendant risks of death had altered in the four hundred years since Thomas Linacre's time. As Rous saw it, 'From the moment that the body becomes a going concern it must fight for its integrity. Its Dance with Death begins long before birth and never ceases throughout the lengthening period of what we call health. Everything coming in contact with it shapes its destiny.'.

This rebound edition contains original covers within. Board spine ends are a little bumped. Spine is slightly cocked. Binding is sound and pages are clear. LW. Used.

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Good condition paperback with bespoke front cover the contents page. Page numbers have been manually renumbered to reflect the composition of this volume. Front cover has separated from the spine, however remains present. Edges, corners, spine ends and spine sides are chipped and rubbed. Page block is tanned and blemished. Binding is otherwise sound and pages are clear. LW. Used.

From the library of Sir Geoffrey Keynes; inscribed in pencil on the title-page of Rous's first contribution, "Gifted to GLK". Bespoke cover, printing title and contents; all pages laboriously renumbered. Francis Peyton Rous (1879-1970), author or co-author of 13 of these 15 articles, won the 1966 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Peyton Rous: father of the tumor virus In 1910, Francis Peyton Rous (1879-1970) identified a transmissible avian tumor virus, a discovery that began the journey from tumor virus biology to tumor biology itself.

Francis Peyton Rous (1879-1979) was involved in the discovery of the role of viruses in the transmission of certain types of cancer. In 1966 he was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work. In this report co-authored by William F. Friedewald, Rous proposed a two-stage mechanism of carcinogenesis, or the causilng of cancer, called initiation and promotion. He further explained that a virus can be induced by carcinogens or it can hasten the growth and transform benign tumors into cancerous ones. For tumors having no apparent trace of virus, Rous cautiously postulated that these "spontaneous" growths might contain a virus that persists in a "masked" or latent state, causing no harm until its cellular environment is disturbed. Rous eventually ceased his research on this project due to the technical complexities involved with pursuing the interaction of viral and environmental factors. He then analyzed different types of cells and their nature in an attempt to understand why tumors go from bad to worse.

Autograph note signed, one page, 4 x 3,5 inch, `The Rockefeller Institute` stationery, (New York), 13.05.1966, to an unnamed correspondent - concerning an autograph request, written and signed in dark ink "Your request has given pleasure to Peyton Rous - May 13, 1966", attractively mounted (removable) for fine display with a photograph, shows Francis Peyton Rous as virologist (altogether 8,25 x 11,75 inch), in very fine condition.

Typed letter signed, one page, 8,5 x 11 inch, `The Rockefeller Institute` stationery, West Cornwall (Connecticut), 8.07.1959, to a "Miss Loewenstein" - concerning "Your three volumes", signed in blue ink "Peyton Rous", with a horizontal letter fold and very mild signs of wear to the upper edge - in fine to very fine condition.In part:"Dear Miss Loewenstein: Your three volumes are here and how I am enjoying them, with the more reason because of a belief that they are your own copies, most generously given. Begun as bedside reading, they`ve proved too exciting for that. Theodor Meysels makes one really see things. [.]".
