(That "restored" comment needs a little explanation: as extensively detailed in his introduction, the editor was working from two different manuscripts -- one edited, the other unedited -- of Rotha's book, which was completed in 1959 but never published, although it was extensively used as source material for Alexander Calder-Marshall's 1963 biography of Flaherty, "The Innocent Eye." Rotha himself died the year after this book appeared, but according to the introduction he was not directly involved in its preparation.).
