All volumes are in matching decorative cloth bindings, uniform in size and design, with deckled edges on all sides and publisher's top-edge tint. Contents span classic Victorian literature, foundational Enlightenment history, and twentieth-century literary biography, offering a well-balanced and thoughtfully curated representation of the Western literary canon. An attractive and cohesive mid-century Book League-era grouping, well suited for collectors, scholars, or display in a home or institutional library. Condition Note: Overall condition Near Fine to Very Good. Two of the three volumes?Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and Living Biographies of Famous Novelists?are in Near Fine condition, with clean, bright interiors and crisp cloth bindings showing minimal handling. The Thackeray volume (Selected Works of William Makepeace Thackeray) is Very Good minus, with bumped corners and early wear at the crown of the spine, including small starting tears; the binding remains sound and the text block tight. They have now been appointed but I am informed that there may be further appointments in the Spring. I am forwarding your letter to the Director of the British Museum informing him that I am willing to give Mr. Cooper a nomination.' Begins 'Dear Vice Chancellor. / Some time ago I proposed Sir David Cecil for election to the Athenaeum. His name has produced a remarkable number of supporters, but no one has been put down as seconder to my proposal.' He asks Ross to second Cecil's nomination, before writing a sentence which is hard to decipher. He concludes by suggesting that he inform the club secretary accordingly, if Ross is willing.
