In den WarenkorbSee the entries for Grenfell and Ross in the Oxford DNB. 3pp, 12mo. On bifolium of light-grey paper. In fair condition, aged and spotted. Folded once for postage. The identity of the recipient is unclear, but the item derives from the papers of Sir David Ross [W. D. Ross], Scottish philosopher and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University (see the Oxford DNB). Whilst fully aware that Ross's 'extra work'during 'this unhappy year' has been 'done with the view of giving your best to aid your country's interest', he has great pleasure in 'giving you the enclosed' (presumably some form of extra remuneration). 'The long hours & the worry of dealing with fresh questions every day, have been very trying to mind & body', and Grenfell assures Ross 'of the partners sincere appreciation of the manner in which you have executed your extra duties'. Grenfell has been 'personally specially interested in the able way in which you have executed the money & exchange questions arising from the Bank of England work'. He ends with best wishes to Ross and his mother for the coming year.

In den WarenkorbSee the entries for Bevin and Ross in the Oxford DNB. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice for postage. Addressed to 'Sir David Ross, K.B.E., LL.D.' and signed 'Ernest Bevin'. Begins: 'Dear Sir David, / In connection with my general plans I wish as soon as possible to make definite proposals concerning the Fair Wages Clause.' He understands that 'discussions between the T.U.C. and the British Employers' Confederation have reached an advanced state', and hopes that they may be brought to an early conclusion, 'in order that your Committee may be in a position to make a report in the very early future'. He asks Ross to 'communicate with both bodies with a view to an early decision being taken'. A report within a few days 'would be of very great help' to Bevin. The Oxford DNB states that Ross's 'gifts of industry, clarity, and fair-minded good sense were constantly in demand on many public bodies', including the National Arbitration Tribunal (194152) and the Civil Service Arbitration Tribunal (194252).

I shall be motoring from Hitchin on Monday - not arriving until about four o'clock, so luncheon will not be possible.' She is not sure 'at what time my performance at the New Theatre takes place! If it is at 6.30 - (like the London theatres) both tea - dinner are out of the question - though supper after the performance would be very agreeable! If the perfomance is at 8 - I could come to tea at 4.30 - & have a little time to rest before it.' She will understand if her suggestions are 'impossible for you', but is 'none the less honored by you invitation to dine, which were I not working, I should be very happy to accept [.] dinner is almost impossible, a very sketchy meal before I go to the theatre'. The three reports give lists of college persons, with general and particular news. Items Two to Four in good condition, lightly aged and creased; Item One as described below. ONE: 'ORIEL COLLEGE, OXFORD / 1917-1918'. Signed in type by 'L. L. P.' [i.e. Langford Lovell Price, retiring treasurer] and dated 31 July 1918. 7pp, 12mo. On two bifoliums of thin war-economy paper, glued together. With stamps of The Treasury, Oriel College, Oxford, and 'With the Treasurer's Compliments'. Aged, creased and worn. Begins: 'The prolongation of the War during the past academical year (1917-1918) has postponed for a while the hope of a revival of the happier, more tranquil state of normal times.' Later: 'For the moment, however, the Provost, a single Tutor, a Treasurer and less than a handful of Fellows, fourteen Undergraduates, and a small remnants of servants dwell in, or use, some of the rooms in the Front and Back Quadrangles, while a Principal, Tutors, Bursar, and students of the other sex retain in their large numbers their temporary occupation of the new and older buildings of St. Mary's Quadrangle.' Later: 'Mrs. Grundy, the wife of Dr. G. B. Grundy, Fellow and Tutor of Corpus Christi College, is, as a new experiment, undertaking the supervision of the internal housekeeping arrangements of the College.' Includes 'Military Honours', and information regarding the 'Loggan' drawing of the college by E. H. New. TWO: 'ORIEL COLLEGE, OXFORD, / 1921-1922.' 7pp, 12mo. On two bifoliums, stitched. More expansive list than in One, with briefer accompanying text. Begins: 'The College is still very full. There were 157 Undergraduates and Bachelors of Arts in residence in Michaelmas Term, 1921, 159 in Hilary Term, 1922, and 160 in Midsummer Term, 1922. Of these 85 to 90 lived in College. About 50 have gone down since Midsummer, but about 50 freshmen are expected to come into residence in 1922-23.' THREE: 'ORIEL COLLEGE, OXFORD, / 1922-1923.' 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Begins: 'The numbers were slightly lower than in the previous year.' Later: 'During the year various improvements in the College buildings have been carried out; several portions of St. Mary's Quadrangle have been restored, and new baths have been provided. Schemes for further improvements are under consideration.' FOUR: Handbill prospectus for 'The Provosts and Fellows of Oriel College Oxford' of Richards and Shadwell. Basil Blackwell, Oxford. Undated, but opening reference dates to 1921: 'ORIEL COLLEGE will reach its sexcentenary in five years time.' Four unpaginated pages, on bifolium of good-quality watermaked laid paper. Prospectus on second page; 'specimen page' on third page (running on to fourth), with entries for Reginald Pecock and John Henry Newman, and 'Subscription Form' at foot of fourth page. The book was published in 1922.
