Recently rebound in yellow half morocco, with gilt titles to a green label and twin raised bands to spine, and matching cloth over boards. With the publisher's original cloth spine bound in at rear. Toning and spotting to edges, otherwise a clean copy presented in an attractive new leather binding.

First Edition (first printing), in the first issue binding of buckram, blocked in green at the backstrip with gilt lettering and decoration. Tall 8vo. xiv, 189pp. Minton contributes a frontispiece, a title page decoration, eight full-page colour plates, 42 full-page black and white plates, and 39 further black and white tail-pieces and drawings in the text. A touch of light occasional blemishing to the cloth. The free endpapers lightly spotted, and with some further very light spotting to the reverse of the colour plate leaves, but with none of the images or text block impacted. Very good indeed in the magnificent double-spread pictorial colour dust wrapper, non-price-clipped (21s. net), but with a touch of wear to the head of the spine panel and to several corner tips resulting in several miniscule fractional of loss. A superbly preserved example.

The contents, with a small inscription to the front endpaper and spotting to the prelims and closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that has several tears without loss, a few old tape repairs to the underside and some toning to the spine and panel edges. Publisher's yellow cloth with green titles to spine, with usual state of dust-jacket designed by John Minton, printed price 21s to flap. Internally a clean and crisp copy. Slight bumping to upper, central and lower spine. Minor bumping to front board corners. Tearing to dust-jacket edges and corners, more so on spine. A 10cm tear to lower left front of jacket. Near fine, a bright copy. Includes over fifty illustrations by John Minton, with eight in full colour.

Original publisher's yellow buckram boards with green titling and decoration to the spine. This is the second state binding of the first printing (The first state had the binding of yellow buckram stamped in green and gilt on the spine). Some light pushing at the spine ends and mild bumping to the lower front corners. Internally clean. The fragile WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Light edge-wear at the spine ends and corners. A few small closed tears and a little toning to the spine and flap edges. Some very superficial rubbed areas to the spine and a very tiny area of loss to the front flap fold, which are barely discernible. The wraparound wrapper artwork by John Minton looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. 8 colour plates, and over 50 black and white drawings, mainly full-page, by John Minton. Alan Ross and John Minton's artistic collaboration and ode to the island of Corsica. Ross and Minton were commissioned by the publisher John Lehmann to travel to Corsica and put together a book of words and images. They visited the island in the post-war summer of 1947. The resulting travelogue contains history, descriptions, impressions, maps, stories, poems and illustrations. Minton's Neo-Romantic illustrations perfectly capture the heat and spirit of the island and the book is arguably his most successful and influential illustrated work. The title comes from the Louis MacNeice line - 'Time was away and somewhere else.' [Spalding, Frances. John Minton. Dance Till The Stars Come Down. 2005. p. 109-14.]. Eight colour lithograph plates and very numerous black and white drawings by John Minton who also designs the dustwrapper with its impressive wraparound image.Endpapers faintly spotted. Head and tail of spine slightly bumped. Small bump to top edge of front cover. Very good indeed in good, chipped and nicked dustwrapper a bit darkened at the spine, defective at tail of spine and at top edge of rear panel, and with a couple of quite long closed tears.

Zustand: Good. 1st ed. Light wear to boards. Content is clean with light toning. Some spotting to page ends. Complete DJ with some edge wear chips, age tone and creasing.

With a clipping from a Christie's catalogue on a Minton artwork loosely inserted.  From the library of Orwell scholar and former UCL deputy librarian Ian Angus, with his neat pencilled ownership to the front free endpaper. Angus was the co-editor of Orwell's Collected Journalism, Essays and Letters published in 1968 and also later contributed to editing the enormous 20-volume edition of Orwell's Complete Works published 1997-8.

FIRST EDITION, frontispiece, title-page design and drawings throughout by John Minton (many full-page and some colour-printed), title-page printed in green and black, pp. 189, royal 8vo, original canary yellow cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt against a green ground with decorations in gilt at either end, the lettering a little rubbed, corners at head gently knocked, very faint mark to upper board, very faint tape shadows to free endpapers, the dustjacket with an overall design by John Minton, a little chipped at corners and ends of backstrip panel, the latter a little tatty at foot with some external tape repair to tears, the same at head of upper joint-fold, very good. Inscribed by John Minton on the flyleaf, in his distinctive hand: 'Kenneth - from Johnny, Nov. 1948'. The recipient was Kenneth Lawrence, with whom Minton had been at Reading School in the 1930s - hence, perhaps, the use of a familiar form of his name, not generally used in his adult life. The pair remained close, with Lawrence receiving numerous letters and artworks from Minton before the latter's early death in 1957. Ross's travel narrative and poetry combine with Minton's wonderful illustrations to achieve an elegant and highly distinctive work, one of the most admired works of illustration in its era; presentation copies are uncommon.
