Paperback. Zustand: vg. First edition. Small folio. XXI, [3], 415, [9]pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers. Half-title inscribed and signed by Doran H. Ross. Pictorial half-title and title page. The elephant is abundantly represented in African culture. In this anthology, 18 scholars pay homage to both the African elephant and African creativity. The elephant's natural history is the starting point for this collection. Other essays discuss the animal's place in religious imagery, local economies and regional cultures. The global appetite for ivory and the consequences of the ivory trade are the focus of two essays and of the epilogue, which also discusses the elephant as an endangered species. This work is splendidly illustrated throughout with hundreds of b/w and color photographic reproductions. Minor age-wear. Wrappers in overall good+ to very good, interior in very good condition.

Zustand: Gut. XV; 230 S.; zahlr. Illustr., auch farbig; 28 cm; kart. Gutes Ex.; Einband stw. gering berieben. - Aus d. Bibliothek von Dr. H. J. Koloß / Völkerkunde-Museum Berlin. - Englisch.
