(from Proceedings of the British Academy, vol. 31) Quoting from a junior colleague's reminiscences: "There was one famous occasion when he entered his ordinary class with the tassel of his square (which he was wearing) burning merrily, having caught fire from his pipe. He was quite uncons…cious of it, and the story goes that there was a general rush to `put the Professor out'. There are various stories of his impatience in church. The only one I remember is that he was rebuked from the pulpit with the words: `Will Professor Taylor please stop rustling his raincoat?'" (p. 5 f.) -- `The two thinkers to whom Taylor owed most in his theological thinking were St. Thomas Aquinas, on whose importance as a philosopher he delivered in 1924 a lecture that is reprinted in Philosophical Studies, and Immanuel Kant. To the former he owed the cosmological argument which he restated, with alterations of his own, in `The Vindication of Religion'. To the latter he owed his sense of the fundamental importance of the Categorical Imperative, and the argument for theism which, again with differences, was restated in The Faith of a Moralist (1930), and occupies great part of the first of its two volumes. The strength of his argument will be very differently estimated by those who start with a disposition to agree and by those who start with a disposition to disagree. This at least may be sain, that the argument for theism has rarely been stated more persuasively, or with a wider range of philosophical and theological learning.' The letter is addressed to 'My dear Vice-Chancellor' without further elaboration, but the item comes from the Ross papers. Temple explains that it has been 'difficult to foresee how this summer c…ould be arranged: the planning of domestic life in two houses under present conditions of staffing is very complicated!' His wife will not be joining him in the visit, as she 'feels obliged to spend that week-end at Canterbury'. He finds the arrangements the Vice-Chancellor has made for him 'most delightful', and hopes he will be able to 'stay and dine with you in College on the Sumday night', but 'it is possible that I may have to return to London in order to give a broadcast talk to America that night at about 10 o'clock'. He awaits a definite answer on the matter, but 'as it is a question of dining in Hall I hope no great inconvenience will be caused by leaving it open'. Signature and postscript in Temple's autograph: 'William Cantuar: / I suppose you will be wearing evening dress on the Sunday - ?'.

The identity of the recipient is unclear, but the item derives from the papers of Sir David Ross [W. D. Ross], Scottish philosopher and Vice-Chancellor of Oxford Unive…rsity (see the Oxford DNB). Whilst fully aware that Ross's 'extra work'during 'this unhappy year' has been 'done with the view of giving your best to aid your country's interest', he has great pleasure in 'giving you the enclosed' (presumably some form of extra remuneration). 'The long hours & the worry of dealing with fresh questions every day, have been very trying to mind & body', and Grenfell assures Ross 'of the partners sincere appreciation of the manner in which you have executed your extra duties'. Grenfell has been 'personally specially interested in the able way in which you have executed the money & exchange questions arising from the Bank of England work'. He ends with best wishes to Ross and his mother for the coming year.

Begins: 'Dear Sir David, / In connection with my general plans I wish as soon as possible to make definite proposals concerning the Fair Wages Cl…ause.' He understands that 'discussions between the T.U.C. and the British Employers' Confederation have reached an advanced state', and hopes that they may be brought to an early conclusion, 'in order that your Committee may be in a position to make a report in the very early future'. He asks Ross to 'communicate with both bodies with a view to an early decision being taken'. A report within a few days 'would be of very great help' to Bevin. The Oxford DNB states that Ross's 'gifts of industry, clarity, and fair-minded good sense were constantly in demand on many public bodies', including the National Arbitration Tribunal (194152) and the Civil Service Arbitration Tribunal (194252).

The subject of the letter is the philanthropic 'settlement' Toynbee Hall in Whitechapel, founded in 1884 by Canon Barnett and Henrietta (DB…E), his wife. Milner begins the letter by giving his opinion that 'the Toynbee meeting must be put off', as 'Everything is in the melting pot.' No decision has been made regarding the new warden (following the departure of Edmund Harvey the previous year), and the future site of the settlement is uncertain. 'Nothing will be lost by waiting till we can confront the world with 1) a Man 2) a Policy.' As things stand, he does not know 'how I could appeal effectively to an Oxford audience to "come over & help us"'.

The body of the letter consists of nineteen typed lines, with 'My dear Ross,' and 'Yours sincerely / Hugh Dalton.' in Dalton's autograph. Typed name of recipient at foot of page: 'Sir David Ross, K.B.E.' He is writing to… thank him 'for all the help which you have given in connection with the Committee on the Release of University staff from Government Service, on which you have so kindly acted as University representative'. He explains why, since the 'numbers of cases requiring arbitration by this Committee have steadily dwindled', 'we should now regard this Committee's activities as being formally ended'. He ends by thanking him for 'discharging this awkward task' of deciding between 'the conflicting claims of a university and the needs of an employing Department'.

He realises that the 'advancement' of the trusts 'is dependant to no small extent on the active interest of the Vice-Chancellor', and he and 'the many who are actively concerned in the progress of the Trusts, are very sensible of the gratitude we owe to you for the intentness of your co-operation during the last three years.'.

The second item has a punch hole centred at the head of the leaf. All three 1p, 12mo, and each with Morrison's sprawling signature 'Yrs sincerely / Herbert Morrison /', the first in green ink. ONE…(25 November 1941): Addressed by Morrison in green ink to 'Dear Sir David'. Thanking him for a note 'in which you assure me of the appreciation of the Nuffield College Committee at my action in agreeing to release Mr. Harold Butler at the end of this year so that he may resume his duties as Warden of the College'. TWO (19 January 1944): Addressed in autograph to 'Dear Vice-Chancellor'. Accepting 'the kind invitation of Lady Ross and yourself to put me up at the College on the night of Thursday, the 27th January'. He will inform him 'on when I shall expect to arrive in Oxford'. THREE (24 January 1944): Having just received an invitation from the President of the Union, 'inviting me to dine at 7 o'clock before the debate next Thursday', he informs him when he expects his car to arrive at Oriel. He gives details of when he will have to leave for 'town', apologising to the Rosses for 'undue inconvenience'.

All three signed 'Bryce'. ONE: 13 February 1914. No place. 3pp, 12mo. On bifolium. Begins: 'My dear Ross / I should like [to] help in so good a cause, but cannot possibly…venture to make any promise for a date so distant as Nov. next. It would be "a tempting of Providence" as we say in Scotland.' He is not even certain whether he will be in England then, 'and there is nothing one has more to avoid than the breaking of promises'. He is 'glad to hear of the movement: & it will be much reinforced if the idea of a School of Social Studies in Oxford goes forward'. TWO: 23 February 1915. 1p, 16mo. On Hindleap letterhead. He apologises for having been 'prevented by incessant work from sooner sending you a donation to the Barnett House Fund'. He hopes 'to hear more about its working from you when next in Oxford'. THREE: 4 December 1917. On House of Lords letterhead. 2pp, 12mo. He is sorry to learn that 'the Poplar experiment did not succeed', but has no doubt that Ross's 'discretion was wisely exercised'. The 'contribution as a mark of sympathy' that he is enclosing 'has to be small, because there are charitable war causes so much more urgent, and making so strong a personal appeal to me that I am obliged to reserve for them all that I can give'. Concludes: 'I gather that Oriel, and doubtless many another college, has fewer undergraduates than ever.'.
