Buch
Zustand: Sehr gut. 240 S. Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Thomas Eakins, overshadowed in his lifetime by such contemporaries as James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent, is recognized today as a major figure in the history of American painting-a powerful, complex, and individualistic artist. The Hirshhorn Museum's Eakins collection provides an intimate view of the artist whose life and work have become a focus of renewed interest in recent decades. The collection comes largely from the holdings of two of Eakins's students and friends, Charles Bregler and Samuel Murray. Not a survey of famous masterpieces, it is, rather, rich in sculpture, drawings, photographs, oil studies for major paintings (Arcadia, The Swimming Hole, The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand, The Biglin Brothers Facing, and others), letters, documents, and studio materials, such as the artist's palette and camera. Many of the studies, not intended by Eakins for public view, afford a glimpse of his working methods-his use of perspective to plan a composition, his use of sculpture and photographs, and his technique of rapid sketching in paint. The collection also contains many later portraits, including the penetrating study of Mrs. Eakins (shown on the cover), William Merritt Chase, other friends and members of the artist's family, and several unfinished portraits which had been rejected by sitters outside the artist's circle. Eakins's last painting, a portrait of Dr. Edward Anthony Spitzka, is also in the collection. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 1550 Mit zahlr. Abb. Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag.
