Erstausgabe
Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. First edition owned and partially compiled by the eminent 20th century British botanist and cryptogamist Ida Mary Roper [1865-1935] presented to her from Bristol naturalist Alfred E Hudd (b. 1846-1920) who compiled the majority of the specimens with an inscription written on the first blank "Miss Ida Roper, from Alfred E. Hudd.". x, 96 pp interleaved with blank pages upon which Hudd has placed 300 individual moss specimens, neatly identified below in his and her hand. Bound in dark green pebble cloth with morocco spine label stamped in gilt. Very Good with moderate wear, soiling and slight rippling to cloth, a few dings to edges of boards with small closed split at right edge of lower board, rear joint frayed and exposed, and tender front hinge. First three leaves tender at gutter with numerous notations made in pencil to the contents. Most specimens intact, albeit a few lacking, contents lightly toned. An examination of the taxonomy of British bryophytes by the first director of Kew Gardens, William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) carefully adorned with hundreds of identified delicate specimens owned by the first female president of the Bristol Naturalist Society, Ida Roper. Roper, a fellow of the Linnean Society, wrote a number of important published works on plants in Bristol and began her herbarium in 1893 up until the end of her life in 1935. Most of the specimens have Hudd's hand below, but a few are scattered throughout with Roper's hand collected in the late 1910's and early 20's. A lovely example of a moss herbarium passed down from one naturalist to another.
