Edizione originale del libretto del melodramma musicato da Pietro Antonio Coppola su libretto di Felice Romani. Sono note le vicende che portarono a contatti tra l'impre…sario torinese Consul e Donizetti che avrebbe dovuto comporre le musiche. Si sarebbe dovuto utilizzare un libretto di Felice Romani gia' musicato da Francesco Basili (Milano 1819), da Francesco Sampieri (Bologna 1823), e da Feliciano Strepponi (Trieste 1829). Romani si era proposto di rimaneggiare il libretto ma limitatamente a tre numeri, tuttavia la proposta di revisione non sembro' sufficiente a Donizetti per il quale il libretto era antiquato. In apertura si legge infatti: "Questo melodramma e' lavoro giovanile dell'autore, raffazzonato ora e migliorata dal medesimo per quanto lo consentono e la natura del soggetto e la necessita' di conservare la prima orditura". Il compositore, inoltre, era contrario alla distribuzione dei ruoli fra i cantanti che l'impresario torinese Consul aveva in mente. Donizetti rifiuto' quindi l'incarico e ConsulÂlo assegno' aÂPietro Antonio Coppola (1793-1877). L'opera fu eseguita con la distribuzione dei ruoli voluta da Consul (Giuditta GrisiÂe'Âla protagonista femminile, Domenico Donzelli quello maschile). Compaiono i nomi degli interpreti. In fine compare 'Ezzelino sotto le mura di Bassano. Ballo tragico in cinque atti' di Giacomo Serafini. ITA.
