B. van Niel after taking a PhD at Stanford. He made numerous studies of bacteria and helped create a biological definition of bacteria as a group. For his contributions, he was awarded the Eli Lilly Award of the American Society for Microbiology (1950). Among the co-authors is Melvin Calvin who was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
