Voor 'Een complex en veranderlijk wezen' is een aantal middelgrote en kleinere essays bijeengebracht, waarin de nadruk ligt op de rol die volgens Montaigne het toeval speelt in het leven van de mens. In het eerste hoofdstuk uit de bundel, 'Verschillende methodes kunnen tot hetzelfde doel leiden', waar Montaigne 'Essais' mee opent, staat de onstandvastigheid van de mens centraal. Aan de beroemde verzuchting die Montaigne in dit hoofdstuk slaakt, 'de mens is een verbazend ijdel, complex en veranderlijk wezen', is de titel van dit achtste deel met vertalingen van de 'Essais' ontleend. Deze gedachte vormt de grondtoon van Montaignes denken. Er valt geen staat op de mens te maken. Niet alleen zijn zijn daden niet te voorzien, maar ook zijn leven zelf in deze wereld is een aaneenrijging van toevalligheden en onzekerheden. Of, zoals Montaigne zegt in het essay 'Wisselende uitkomsten bij eenzelfde doelstelling': 'De Fortuin speelt bij de gebeurtenissen altijd de eerste viool.' Kortom, je kunt niet generaliseren over de mens, noch over zijn leven in deze wereld. Vandaar ook Montaignes weigering een eenduidige, systeemgebonden filosofie te ontwerpen of aan te hangen, een weigering waarvan de diversiteit en complexiteit van elk hoofdstuk in de 'Essais' opnieuw getuigt. Immers, het gaat hem niet om algemene waarheden, maar om zichzelf tot in zijn diepste wezen te leren kennen. Met dat doel tekent hij het leven in heel zijn verscheidenheid, met zoveel mogelijk facetten.
