Z : 352 pp./pages, illustrations en noir et en couleur - C'est la traduction intégrale de deux livres : "Saturated Blue", paru chez Lapis Press (maison d'édition fondée par l'artiste), peu de temps avant sa mort et "Cobalt Blue", ouvrage publié par la Sam Francis Foundation il y a trois ans, qui est la retranscription des textes trouvés dans son atelier après son décès - poèmes, notes, pages de carnets, journaux. Sa vie durant, Sam Francis écrivit beaucoup, mais il ne publia rien, hormis quelques phrases ici et là dans des catalogues. La publication de cet ensemble est essentiel pour la connaissance de l'artiste, homme et ?uvre. Les écrits de Sam Francis sont très étroitement liés à ses peintures. Mais ces écrits ne concernent pas seulement l'esthétique ; ils traitent souvent de questions fondamentales, mais d'une façon subtilement métaphysique. Son attention se porte vers la lumière, l'ombre et l'obscurité : la magie de la couleur, le secret de l'existence, l'évidence et le doute de l'univers. Ces textes sont religieux, mais dans un certain sens uniquement. Cette religiosité est plus transcendante que structurée. On n'y trouvera nulle nostalgie de perfection, ni d'un quelconque système idéologique, mais plutôt la simple invocation d'une présence globale. Pourquoi Sam Francis écrit-il ces textes, si inhabituels dans la forme et le contenu qu'il est difficile de les catégoriser ? Peut-être écrit-il pour se débarrasser d'idées et de formulations qui autrement lui tourneraient indéfiniment dans la tête. Un sentiment de nécessité anime ces écrits. Peut-être sont-ils comme les réminiscences de rêves qui, à certains moments impérieux, exigent d'être traduits sur le papier. Car Sam Francis a écrit toute sa vie. Sa vision est globale, en ce sens que ses écrits se préoccupent globalement de questions artistiques envisagées sous l'angle le plus universel.
