Check to Your King is the story of a self-styled French aristocrat, Charles de Thierry who decides to move to New Zealand and create a utopia - a land where Pakeha and Maori can live in harmony. He declares himself the sovereign chief of New Zealand (and along the way, also a Baron, King of Nuka Hiva, and a pioneer colonist). De Thierry is a strange, crazy, romantic figure in New Zealand history, who clearly saw himself as a misunderstood but great savior of people and proponent of justice. Hyde's rendition of him is extremely sympathetic - the Baron seems to genuinely have good intentions. He just also seems to have very little real understanding of politics or people. DJ.
