[.] Im Sonderbundskrieg 1847 stellten die Bundestruppen 21 Kavalleriekompanien des Auszugs und 5,5 der Reserve oder der Landwehr auf, [.] die Sonderbundskantone 3,5 Kompanien [.]. [.] Die Bundesverfassung von 1848 überliess die wichtigsten militärischen Kompetenzen den Kantonen, obwohl der Bund die Ausbildung der Dragoner und der Guiden übernahm [.]. Jede Division verfügte über eine Guidenkompanie und ein Kavallerieregiment. 1895 wurden die Dragoner in vier Brigaden aufgeteilt [.]. 1924 und 1938 wurden einzelne Schwadronen aufgegeben. Die Kavalleriebrigaden umfassten von da an zwei berittene Regimenter sowie ein Radfahrerbataillon. 1936 wurden sie in Leichte Brigaden umgewandelt [.]. [.] Am Ende des Aktivdiensts befürwortete Generalstabschef Jakob Huber im Gegensatz zu General Henri Guisan die militärisch sinnvolle, aber politisch heikle Abschaffung der Kavallerie.
