[San Francisco 1958, Califorina Historical Society.] Buff stiff wrappers, article pp.79-88 & 129-136, very good, clean & solid, 17 x 25.5 cm., 2 complete issues, with parts: 1 & 2 the comlete essay. * * FIRST & ONLY OBSCURE EDITION * * . *** **** *** . . THE COMPLETE ESSAY FOUND IN TWO ISSUES OF THE JOURNAL . . . FIRST AND ONLY OBSCURE EDITION . * The author: Robert Forest Gayton SPIER [1922-2014]: . This article deals with the kinds of food the Chinese ate in California prior to the 1849 gold rush. Eventually the Chinese explored and found ample "native" Chinese food in California, including seaweed in Monterey, as well as other unusual examples in other parts of Northern California which became common Chinese foods. . An obscure article, seldom found complete in two parts. . * Key aspects of Chinese food habits in the 19th century, as described by Spier: Dietary Staples: A typical Chinese meal included rice, soup, and several side dishes. Fresh Ingredients: There was a high emphasis on fresh, seasonal produce and vegetables. Variety of Foods: The diet incorporated a wide range of items, including dried oysters, abalone, cuttlefish, bamboo sprouts, mushrooms, pork, poultry, vermicelli, Chinese bacon, peanut oil, and various dried fruits. Use of Tea: Tea was consumed extensively, rather than water, a practice noted by Spier to have potentially significant health implications. Communal Dining: Meals were often prepared and shared within the group, with expenses for food being a shared cost. Cultivation of Food: Chinese communities cultivated their own terrace gardens to grow herbs, spices, and vegetables. Cultural Significance: Food was not just sustenance but also a marker of cultural identity, and practices like the communal aspect of food preparation and consumption were integral to their community life. . *** "Robert F. G. Spier's two-part article, "Food Habits of Nineteenth-Century California Chinese," published in the California Historical Society Quarterly in 1958, details the cuisine and dietary practices of Chinese immigrants in California during that period. The article describes typical dishes, the use of fresh ingredients and vegetables, and cultural practices like the communal sharing of meals and the widespread consumption of tea over water. Spier also notes the variety of ingredients used, including dried seafood like abalone and cuttlefish, as well as common staples such as rice, vegetables, and pork." Quoted from JSTOR. . *** CONDITION: . Bound in the original publisher's buff stiff wrappers, firm, clean and solid. Contents likewise, no issues. Issued is a relatively small subscribed edition. . * .
