Braakman, Amsterdam 1695. 12mo. (68)+303+(9) pages. Titlepage printed in red and black. Contemporary full vellum. * French edition of "An Account of Denmark As It was in the Year 1692" (1694), the famous, though quite malicious book about Denmark and the Danes. Robert Molesworth was English ambassador at the Danish court from 1689 to 1692, when he almost fled after a range of incidents caused by his fiery temper. His book became a tremendous succes and was seen as a pamphlet against absolutism at all stages (also at the court of William and Mary), demonstrated in a most pure form in Denmark - where this book of course was banned. ** Molesworth's book is one of - if not the - most interesting book about Denmark ever written by a foreigner. Among it's many observations is one particularly precise description of the Danish national character: "I never knew any country, where the Minds of the People were more of one calibre and pitch than here; you shall meet none of extraordinary Parts or Qualifications, or excellent in particular Studies and Trades; you see no Enthusiasts, Mad-men, Natural Fools, or fanciful folks; but a certain equality of Understanding reigns among them: every one keeps the ordinary beaten road of sense.".
Zustand: Very Good. Amsterdam, Adrian Braakman, 1695. 12:o. (68),+ 303,+ (9) s.+ utvikbar grav. karta. Titel tryckt i rött och svart. Ensktaka fläckar, sid 155-156 med reva, titelbladet med gammal papperslagning. Nära samtida hfrbd, rikt guldornerad rygg med röd titeletikett, marmorerade pärmpapper. Äldre numrering i bläck på ryggen. Ur biskop Eric Wallers bibliotek, med dess exlibris. Äldre namnteckning. Bibl. Danica II, 598. Thesaurus 566. Det engelska originalet ?An account of Denmark, as it was in year 1692?, utkom 1694 och tredje upplagan därav samma år. Hardcover / Hardback.

8vo, pp. [iv], [xlviii], 271; a good clean copy in contemporary calf or sheep, a bit worn but sound. First edition of Molesworth's Account of Denmark, written in a spirit of bitterness after spending three years (1689-92) as British envoy to the court of Christian V, where his whiggish spirit revolted against the absolute monarchy he found there. The result is no mere travel book, but an important work in two ways. First, Molesworth has something to say about the purposes of travel for the young man abroad - it should not be merely for leisure or to cultivate the arts or languages, but for him to gain perspective on other countries: 'the travelling recommended here is that of Men, who set out set well stock'd with the knowledge of their own Country, as to be able to compare it with others. with this help such Travellers could not fail of becoming serviceable to the Publick, in contributing towards the bettering of our Constitution' (from the Preface). As Kipling put it two centuries later, 'What do they know of England, who only England know?'. Second, Molesworth's book preached vigorously against authoritarian monarchy, and although at the time it was something of an embarrassment to William III, for the next fifty or more years it was treated by whigs as a classic text, warning against the dangers of absolutist rule, of 'priestcraft' (not just Catholics, but protestant ministers as well), and of standing armies which might be used against the populace. Wing M2382A. Provenance. Ownership inscription on title of M. Breton, University College Oxford, 1763, i.e. Moyle Breton, of Kent, who matriculated in 1761 at the age of 17. He was eventually awarded a DCL in 1787.
