Bound in beautiful vellum with vibrant gilt borders on boards, gilt floral embellishments on spine, title is gilt lettering over swatch of morrocan leather on spine. Minor wear due to age. Outer hinges look like they may have been professionally repaired at some point- not noticable on first glance, could just be a crease from reading. Raised bands on spine, remnants of a silk marker laid in at title. Marbled endpapers and textblock. Pages very clean, NO foxing or markings, binding very tight. Although possibly re-bound, antique vellum binding is rare and adds value to this piece. Original owner's name on title page. Title page in black ink only. A beautiful book for its age (282 years young!), please feel free to ask for photos.

During the rule of Cromwell, he lived with Lady Clinton as an upper servant; this book is dedicated to her. While in her service he found time to learn French and Italian. He translated into English the first three parts of La Calprenede's romance of "Cleopatra," under the title of "Hymen's Praeludia, or Love's MasterPiece," in 1652, 1654, and 1655. The first part took a while to be published but, according to Loveday, would have long since "look'd upon the light, if I had not the sin to answer for of trusting a bookseller" (DNB).
