Then fol-lows an account of the processes of practical decolonisation until the present and the third section looks thematically at a range of postcolonial issues ranging from nuclear politics to cultural identity. The contributors to this authoritative and comprehensive book comprise leaders in Pacific studies from a wide range of disciplines ? history, economics, political and social science, anthro-pology and literature. Born of commoner status on the remote island of Matuku in the early part of the century, Salato's many talents were first noticed by his teachers at Lau Provincial School. It was also there that he began his lifelong friendship with a schoolmate, the man who would become Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara. Further education at Queen Victoria School and the Central Medical School (now the Fiji School of Medicine) opened the way for a long and distinguished career in Fiji's medical service, including an appointment to the Great Council of Chiefs. Immediately after Fiji's independence in 1970, Salato became the first Fijian to be elected as the mayor of Suva. Afterwards, he served as Fiji's Acting High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
