Signed limited edition, preceding the first trade edition of what many consider the greatest golf book of the 20th century. Octavo, original half vellum over green boards, gilt titles to the spine, top edge gilt, tissue-guarded frontispiece, illustrated. One of 300 numbered copies signed by both Robert T. Jones and O.B. Keeler o…n the limitation page and again by Jones beneath his frontispiece, this is number 65. Additionally signed by Gary Player on the limitation page. Gary Player occupies a central place in the history of golf and stands among the sportâs most accomplished and influential champions. Known as part of golfâs legendary âBig Threeâ alongside Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, Player distinguished himself through exceptional longevity, relentless physical discipline, and remarkable international success. Over the course of his career, the South African golfer captured nine major championships and more than 150 professional victories worldwide, becoming one of the few players to achieve the career Grand Slam. In this respect, Player may be seen as carrying forward the standard of excellence established by Bobby Jones, whose brilliance and sportsmanship defined the gameâs golden age. Jonesâs extraordinary achievements, including his historic Grand Slam of 1930, helped establish the ideals and traditions that shaped the sport in the twentieth century. Decades later, Player emerged as one of golfâs great international ambassadors, combining extraordinary skill with a deep respect for the gameâs traditions while capturing nine major championships and achieving the career Grand Slam. Together, Jones and Player represent two generations of greatness whose careers helped define and expand the legacy of modern golf. In very good condition. From the library of distinguished American industrialist, philanthropist, and collector B. Brannan Reath (1873â"1943) with his bookplate to the pastedown. Housed in the rare original publisher's slipcase. A completely unique example uniting two of golfâs most legendary champions, whose achievements helped shape and elevate the enduring legacy of the modern game. Down the Fairway: The Golf Life and Play of Robert T. Jones, Jr. offers one of the earliest and most intimate accounts of the career and philosophy of Bobby Jones, the legendary amateur whose brilliance transformed the game of golf during its golden age. Written in collaboration with the noted sportswriter O. B. Keeler, Jonesâs close friend and longtime chronicler, the work combines biography, instruction, and reflection, providing insight into both Jonesâs extraordinary competitive achievements and his thoughtful approach to the sport. Through personal recollections, technical observations, and Keelerâs vivid narration, the book traces Jonesâs rise to prominence and explores the principles that guided his play, including discipline, sportsmanship, and respect for golfâs traditions. As both a contemporary record of Jonesâs career and an enduring classic of golf literature, Down the Fairway remains an important document of the gameâs formative modern era.

First trade edition of what many consider the greatest golf book of the twentieth century. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the verso of the frontispiece, "For John with warm regards Bob Jones." Foreword by Grantland Rice. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a c…ustom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. An exceptional example, rare and desirable in the original dust jacket and signed. "Jones left an enduring legacy of athletic prowess and exemplary personal characteristics. No one is likely to break his records of 13 U.S. and British national championships, and four in one year (he won the U.S. Open a total of four times, the U.S. Amateur five times, the British Open three times, and the British Amateur one time) The Masters seems to have a secure place in the pantheon of golf; and the name Bobby Jones will continue to represent the highest standards of amateurism, sportsmanship and self-mastery" (ANB).

FIRST EDITION. 76 x 51 mm. (3 x 2"). [100] pp. Original green or orange paper wrappers, side stitched, titling on front cover and imprint on spine. In a custom-made folding buckram box with book wells for the three books and gilt-stamped marbled paper label inset on spine of the box. Consisting of three bound sets of 50 sequenti…al photographs that, when flipped either from back to front or front to back, generate a stop motion animation of Bobby Jones demonstrating the proper form for executing a shot with various golf clubs (see below). Advertisements on inside wrappers. Donovan & Murdoch 22610. One volume with portions of spine gone at either end (with partial loss of imprint), wrappers inevitably somewhat soiled, corners a bit rounded (as expected), but still remarkably well preserved, especially considering its inevitable hard use, being entirely sound and with the photographs in excellent condition. This is a scarce grouping of some of the most charming sports (as well as miniature) books we've ever offered for sale. In the 1930s the famous London department store Harrods published a series of so-called sports "flicker" books, of which these three are perhaps the most famous (other sports books involved cricket, tennis, lacrosse, soccer, badminton, swimming, and greyhound racing). Our three "flicker" books, when the pages are riffled with one's thumb or fingers, show the famous smooth-swinging American golfer Bobby Jones executing shots with various clubs. The first book (#11a in the Harrods series) features the driver and the mashie. The modern equivalent for this latter piece of equipment is slightly elusive, but the "mashie" is an iron club with considerable loft meant to hit a golf ball a relatively short distance with a high trajectory (Jones' "driver" has the same meaning today as it did 90 years ago). The second book features shots with a "brassie," roughly equivalent to today's 3- or 4-wood, and an "iron" (also called a "driving iron"), which is like today's 1- or 2-iron. The third book shows Jones putting and escaping from heavy rough (with a high-lofted club like today's sand wedge). It is great fun--not to mention still instructive--to riffle through these photographs, watching one of the world's most celebrated golf swings come to life, complete with Jones' knickers, white shirt, and flapping tie. It is also a fact of some interest that this English series would feature an American player at a time when British dominance in golf was beginning to erode. Given the physical use to which these items have been subjected, it is difficult to believe that they are still intact, let alone that they are solid enough to be handled without worry.

Rare autograph album bound into the original limp leatherette of Rights and Wrongs of Golf by Robert T. Jones. Duodecimo, gilt titles to the front panel. Signed on the first blank by Robert T. Jones, Jr. (four-time U.S. Open champion and winner of the 1930 Grand Slam) and Gary Player (nine-time major champion and career Grand Sl…am winner), additionally signed throughout by Billy Burke (1931 U.S. Open champion), Jimmy Thomson (1936 U.S. Open champion), Tony Manero (1929 Spanish Open champion), Johnny Farrell (1928 U.S. Open champion), Olin Dutra (1934 U.S. Open champion; 1932 PGA Championship winner), and Johnny Revolta (1935 PGA Championship winner). In very good condition. A fine collection of autographs representing a remarkable group of major champions and notable figures from golfâs golden age and modern era. The championships represented by these players reflect the formative decades of modern competitive golf, when tournaments such as the U.S. Open, PGA Championship, and leading national opens began to assume their enduring place at the center of the professional game. Victories in these events required not only technical mastery but also exceptional endurance and consistency, often contested over demanding courses and extended formats that tested the full range of a playerâs skill. During the interwar and mid-twentieth-century period, these championships helped transform golf from a largely regional pastime into a sport of international stature, drawing competitors from Europe and the United States and establishing traditions that continue to define the modern major championships. The players represented here were among those who shaped this competitive landscape, contributing to the prestige and historical significance of the tournaments that remain the gameâs highest honors.

Exceptionally rare 1941 Bahamas Red Cross Benefit Match Admission Pass signed by Bobby Jones, Walter Hagan, Gene Sarazen, and Tommy Armour handsomely framed with a typed letter signed by the Duke of Windsor, "Edward" to Gene Sarazen thanking him for a fine set of golf clubs and anticipating his visit and participation in the ben…efit match dated 3rd February, 1941. With a second typed letter signed by the Duke of Windsor letter dated 21st January, 1942 preserved in an archival plastic sleeve and tucked into a pocket at rear. One page, on the Duke of Windor's Government House Bahamas letterhead, the first letter is dated 3rd February, 1941 and reads in part: Dear Sarazen, My grateful thanks for your letter of January 24th and for the fine set of golf clubs which have arrived here safely. I hardly tell you how delighted I am with this handsome gift. The Duchess, who is President of our local branch of the Red Cross, appreciates as much as I do, your suggesting to the Manager of the four tennis stars, that they should come to Nassau to play some exhibition matches in aid of the Red Cross. But the big event of the winter season will be yours, Bobby Jones', Walter Hagen's and Tommy Armour's visit in March and I can assure you all a very warm welcome and a keenly interested gallery, even if our gold course is not up to the standard you are used to. With my renewed thanks for your fine and welcome gift, Believe me, Yours sincerely, "Edward." Handsomely mounted and framed with an original ticket from the event with the printed details: Bahamas Country Club Nassau Bahamas Benefit Match in Aid of the Bahamas Red Cross Under the Distinguished Patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor Bobby Jones and Tommy Armour vs. Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen Sunday, March 16th 1941. The ticket is boldly signed by all four golfers. The second letter, in a folder at rear, pocket at rear is dated 21st January, 1942 and reads in part: Dear Sarazen, The Duchess and I greatly appreciate your suggestion that you and Hagen play a match for the Red Cross here, but in view of the fact that I have already refused an offer of Fred Corcoran to organize a charity match as last year, and owing to American's entry into the war, there will be no winter tourist season to speak of, I really do not think it would be an auspicious time to organize anything for the Red Cross along the lines you suggest. Looking forward to playing with you again and with my best wishes, Believe me, Sincerely yours, "Edward." Mounted, matted, and framed. The letters measure 8.75 inches by 6.25 inches. The entire piece measures 23 inches by 14.25 inches. After the abdication crisis of 1936, the Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) was appointed Governor of the Bahamas (1940â"1945). During his tenure in Nassau, he and the Duchess became prominent social figures, hosting and supporting high-profile events, including charity functions. The Bahamas in the late 1930sâ"early 1940s was a fashionable winter destination for wealthy Americans and British elites. Golf exhibitions featuring major champions were popular fundraising attractions including exhibition matches staged at the Bahamas Country Club in aid of local and wartime charities such as the Bahamas Red Cross. One such benefit brought together an extraordinary field of major champions â" Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, and Tommy Armour â" whose appearance in Nassau underscored both the colonyâs status as an elite winter resort and the Duke and Duchess of Windsorâs role as highly visible patrons of philanthropic and social events during the governorship. These tournaments functioned simultaneously as charitable fundraisers, society occasions, and instruments of soft diplomacy, linking British colonial administration with American sporting celebrity at a moment of global instability. Original photograph of Bobby Jones swinging a wood on the fairway. Boldly and warmly inscribed by Bobby Jones. The photograph measures 7.5 inches by 9.25 inches. Triple matted and framed. The entire piece measures 15.5 inches by 18 inches. Photographs signed by Bobby Jones are uncommon. Robert T. Jones was an American golfer wh…o was one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport. Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club, and co-founded the Masters Tournament. The innovations that he introduced at the Masters have been copied by virtually every professional golf tournament in the world. Jones was the most successful amateur golfer ever to compete at a national and international level. During his peak from 1923 to 1930, he dominated top-level amateur competition, and competed very successfully against the world's best professional golfers. Jones often beat stars such as Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen, the era's top pros. Jones earned his living mainly as a lawyer, and competed in golf only as an amateur, primarily on a part-time basis, and chose to retire from competition at age 28, though he earned significant money from golf after that, as an instructor and equipment designer. Explaining his decision to retire, Jones said, "It [championship golf] is something like a cage. First you are expected to get into it and then you are expected to stay there. But of course, nobody can stay there." Jones is most famous for his unique "Grand Slam," consisting of his victory in all four major golf tournaments of his era (the open and amateur championships in both the U.S. & the U.K.) in a single calendar year (1930). In all Jones played in 31 majors, winning 13 and placing among the top ten finishers 27 times. After retiring from competitive golf in 1930, Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club soon afterwards in 1933. He also co-founded the Masters Tournament, which has been annually staged by the club since 1934 (except for 1943â"45, when it was canceled due to World War II). The Masters evolved into one of golf's four major championships. Jones came out of retirement in 1934 to play in the Masters on an exhibition basis through 1948. Jones played his last round of golf at East Lake Golf Club, his home course in Atlanta, on August 18, 1948. A picture commemorating the event now sits in the clubhouse at East Lake. Citing health reasons, he quit golf permanently thereafter.
