Grey illustrated dust jacket lettered red and white on spine and upper cover. Presentation copy: 'March '95 For my friend, Peter! [Haining] . to let you in on the "real" Max Brand. Best always Bill [William Bloodworth] (see p. 342).' The paragraph the page refers to is ticked and consists of a thank you from the editors to William Bloodworth and others at the end of the book. Handwritten signed letter loosely inserted from William Bloodworth to Peter Haining no address, dated Feb. 14 '95 and consisting of about 185 words in which he says he will send his personal copy of 'Feep' [i.e. 'Lost in Time and Space with Lefty Feep'], 'Xerox-copy whatever you wish from it, and then mail it back to me.' He says he is glad Haining liked the Holmes story, and continues, 'Your kind words about the quality of my writing are much appreciated. I have great respect for your opinions with regard to popular fiction.' ISBN 0803212445. Attached copy of Haining's reply saying nothing in the book 'fits the bill'. He mentions using a Max Brand story and enquires about another story called 'The King' that he would like to use in a Hollywood project 'he has nursed for years.' Newspaper clipping about the book also attached (with a reference to 'The King' highlighted by Haining). Frederick Schiller Faust (1892 Ð 1944), a popular American author, wrote literary westerns under the pen name Max Brand (he also used a variety of other different pseudonyms). He created a series of pulp fiction novels about Dr. James Kildare, a young medical intern. These became successful films and a television series starring Richard Chamberlain and Raymond Massey. Faust died on the Italian front while serving as a war correspondent. Peter Haining (1940 Ð 2007) was a prolific writer and editor on subjects ranging from crime and horror to witchcraft and fantasy. He became Editorial Director of the New English Library publishing house. William Bloodworth, Professor of American Studies, President Emeritus, Augusta State University is the author of books about Upton Sinclair and Max Brand and has written articles on the literature of the American West among others.
