Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition. LONG ISLAND MAN & NATURE FISH-SHAPE PAUMANOK BY ROBERT CUSHMAN MURPHY 1964 1ST. I am pleased to be able to offer an interesting little book, the transcript of the Penrose Memorial Lecture for 1962 sponsored by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia. This lecture was delivered by Robert Cushman Murphy and was titled: Fish-Shape Paumanok- Nature and Man on Long Island. Dr. Murphy, distinguished naturalist and Lamont Curator Emeritus of Birds at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, tells the story of nature and man on Long Island, the land of his own birth and his lifelong home. This small hard cover book (6 ¼ x 9 ¼ inches, 67 pages) was published by the American Philosophical Society, as the Second Printing dated December 1964. It is bound in dark blue cloth with silver gilt decorations and titles on cover and spine and protected by a printed paper dust jacket. The book is nicely illustrated with a map and reproductions of paintings, photographs, and by sketches made between 1833 and 1867 by William Sidney Mount. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The dust jacket shows some light toning inside and out, has some bumping to the spine tips and corners is price-clipped. The hard covers are clean and bright with some minor bumping too and a bit of finish loss along the top & bottom edges. Inside the book is unmarked and free of toning or foxing although there is a small patch of a missing label. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Soft Cover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. Later Printing. Publisher's glossy wraps. Logbook is the fascinating chronicle, in diary form, of a voyage of one of the last Yankee whaleships in the twilight days of sail. More than that, it is an adventure story, a travelogue, a naturalist's notebook and a charming love story all rolled into one - written, it must be added, by a man whose profession is not writing, although he ha written scientific works. Robert Cushman Murphy is a naturalist - one of the world's great authorities on birds. During one of these expeditions Murphy begins to detail the life, sounds, sights, adversities, struggles, adventure, and survival of the whalers on the whaleship Daisy. Daisy herself, being an out of date vessel, takes on a life of her own. Combined with touching notes penned to his recent bride this book offers something for everyone. . VERY GOOD+. Color Illustrations. 8vo 8" - 9" tall. xxviii, 373 pp.
