A Ramble Round the Globe is an 1894 book by Thomas Dewar detailing his journey around the world publicising Dewars Scotch Whisky. Dewar's trip was motivated not only by a desire to market his brand, but also by medical imperatives: Dewar had been battling a persistent cold that had been growing worse, and his doctor suggested that a warmer climate could rid him of this threatening cold. Contains tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece, (xv), 316 pp + 32 pp publisher's catalogue with 220 monochrome illustrations throughout. From 'The Hall Bushey Library' with indigo stamps to the half-title and first leaf of text, paper plate to the rear board, end papers cracked, rubbing to the covers, corners and edges, text block clean. An archive of material from the personal papers of Robert Cowell, a semiprofessional actor from the San Francisco Bay Area whose career stretched from the 1940s to the 1970s. The collection includes two scrapbooks with photographs, programs, and newspaper clippings of performances, along with 63 loose B&W photographs (five in color) measuring between 1.5" X 2" and 8" X 10", and an audio recording. Overall light general wear, very good. Cowell began acting in 1945 with the Pasadena Players doing both comedy and musical productions. He toured with the USO entertaining troops at bases from California to Washington State. After a brief stint on the East Coast with The Imperial Players of Jersey City, he returned to the Bay Area as a member of Little Fox Theatre and The Straw Hat Theatre where he performed alongside Tony-nominated actor Jane Connell. He was also active in the gay community with a part in the exotic romance *Rusty* by Douglas Dean in 1976. The scrapbooks document his various roles in both lead and supporting parts. Most notable is a 15-page typed letter to his parents detailing his West Coast tour and a number of clippings reviewing *Funny Side Up*, a topical musical revue he helped pen, accompanied by a dozen sheet of typed and hand written lyrics for the show. There are also numerous head shot and performance photos taken throughout his career, and a reel-to-reel audio recording of Cowell singing the original song, "To Soothe the Savage." An interesting collection of material from a mid-Century actor from the Bay Area theatre scene.
