Vertreter des Surrealismus und des Tachismus. Kam 1919 mit der Familie von Köln und Frankfurt nach Malmedy bei Lüttich. 1928 erster Aufenthalt in Paris, Bekanntschaft mit Otto Freundlich. Anfang der 1930er Jahre zweiter Aufenthalt in Paris, Kontakt mit Vertretern des Surrealismus. 1933 erste Ausstellung surrealistischer Fotografien und Zeichnungen. 1934 Edition eines eigenen Gedichtbands mit Fotografien. Zusammenarbeit mit Dichtern wie Jean Lescure, Raymond Queneau, Paul Éluard oder Claude Esteban, deren Bücher er illustrierte. 1938 Teilnahme an der von André Breton und Paul Éluard organisierten Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme in der Galerie Beaux-Arts in Paris. Mitte der 1940er Abwendung von der Fotografie zugunsten der Malerei. Stilistisch entwickelte er sich weg vom Surrealismus zu einer klareren Abstraktion. 1959 Teilnahme an der documenta II in Kassel.
