Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Milano [Milan], Tipografia di Gaetano Bozza, 1863. Octavo, iv, 7-126 pages plus a folding lithographed plate and tipped-in lithographed 'Spiegazione della Tavola' (but lacking the title leaf); the last page contains 'errata-corrige'. Later binder's cloth, retaining the original printed green front wrapper; manuscript paper title-label on the spine; scattered foxing (moderate at the beginning and end of the book); minor early restoration to the leading margin of one leaf; 'Explanation of the Plate' slightly cropped at the left-hand margin; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy. A curious medical pamphlet giving details details of the wounds sustained by Giuseppe Garibaldi at the Battle of Aspromonte (La Giornata dell'Aspromonte) on 29 August 1862. Among much purple prose advocating Italian unification and a short personal account of the battle (Ripari fought alongside Garibaldi), it includes clinical notes relating to surgical procedures undertaken to remove the bullet fragment from Garibaldi's foot, medical opinions from foreign experts, and (on the folding plate) illustrations of the wound, surgical instruments, an example of the projectile, and shrapnel from it.
