Toni Savage was a key figure in the Leicestershire private press movement, best known for his broadsheets. Not all copies of this keepsake bear his signature. Unpaginated but 8 pages including an illustration on the title-page and 3 full-page illustrations by Rigby Graham. John Clare (1793-1864) was an English poet. The son of a farm labourer, he became known for his celebrations of the English countryside and sorrows at its disruption. Between Christmas and New Year, 1841, Clare was committed to Northampton General Lunatic Asylum (now St Andrew's Hospital), and this booklet contains lines he wrote at the asylum. The booklet is sewn-bound in the original card covers with black titling and an illustration by Rigby Graham showing the road to Northampton. The booklet is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the covers and a small stain near the top edge of the rear cover. The spine ends are bumped and there is slight curling to the bottom covers. The contents are secure and clean and the colophon at the end of the book has been flat signed by the artist, Rigby Graham. Signed by Illustrator(s).
