Cover rubbed, light marginated, otherwise good and clean. - Text bilingual Dutch and English. - From the text: wenn ich sitze, möchte ich nicht sitzen, wie mein sitzfleisch möchte sondern wie mein sätzgeist sich, säsze er, den Stuhl sich flöchte. - This part of a poem by Christian Morgenstern is printed on the labels which Rietveld had made to stick under his chairs. These lines and his chair-designs speak the same language. Rietveld thought sitting was an active occupation; resting should be done in bed. But for a few exceptions, his chairs are hard, which many people still find very uncomfortable. A funny thing is, that in 1940 a variation of the zig-zag chair was made with a cushion on it. This chair, along with other furniture, was shown in an exhibition at Metz & Co's. In an article about this exhibition, it said that the furniture shown was less avant-garde than usual, so that the costumer would find more useful pieces, and that even Rietveld had confined himself to improving old designs for this exhibition. (De 8 en Opbouw, 1940, nr. 25, 26, p. 218). Nevertheless, it is the original designs that are still sold nowadays in various shops. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
