Riese became a professor of history of medicine at Richmond and eventually also professor of neurology and psychiatry. As part of the reparations, Riese received the legal status of full professor at Frankfurt University in 1969, 24 years after the end of the war and 36 years after his expulsion from Frankfurt. Much of his writings were devoted to the history of medicine. In 1959 he published A History of Neurology, and in 1977 came Selected Papers in the History of Aphasia. In the following year he issued, Historical explorations in medicine and psychiatry (1978).
