Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Unbekannte Unterschrift / Widmung / Aufkleber; Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen; Vergilbt / ausgeblichen. Created and developed by the Ptolemaic kings, the Library of Alexandria was regarded as the world's main center of scholarship from the 3 rd century BC until at least the reign of Cleopa…tra (48-30 BC). The dream to establish a gigantic library that could assemble all known texts of the Hellenistic period, the outstanding achievements of the scholars who worked inside its walls, and, finally, the mysteries surrounding its disappearance, have bestowed an almost mythic status on this monumental library. Where was the Royal Library exactly located? What kind of texts were kept in that library? To what extent did the Library of Alexandria become a meeting point for different languages and cultures? Should we distinguish between the Museum and the Library from an institutional point of view? Were the book collections housed in separate buildings? What caused the destruction of those collections and how much was lost? Why do some ancient authors remain silent about the Library's disappearance? Polis--The Jerusalem Institute of Languages and Humanities held an international conference to seek answers to these question. The 2015 conference on the Library of Alexandria gathered historians, archaeologists, and linguists, as well as specialists on the Septuagint and on Greek literature. This book presents the proceedings of the interdisciplinary conference.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers by Dan Rico, 4to, 15 pages. Includes other illustrations by Rico as well as photos. 29 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates as "Youth." Single Holocaust-era issue of monthly communist Yiddish youth magazine Yungvarg. The magazine ran from 1937 until at least 1944. "As the Yiddish sc…hool systems blossomed in the 1920s, an accompanying literature developed in New York. The Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute published Kinder Zhurnal [Children's Journal] from 1921 to the late 1970s. The editor for the first 15 years was the leading Yiddish literary critic Shmuel Niger. The Workman Circle published Kinderland, and then Kinder Tsaytung [Children's Newspaper]. The communists [sic, Communist] schools published the monthly Yungvarg. Many of the leading Yiddish writers tried their hands at writing for children, and as a result, there are many masterpieces in these journals. The leading illustrators were Zuni Maud, Yosl Cutler, Aron Goodelman, Avreml, Saul Raskin, Note Koslovsky, Boris Aronson, Emanuel Romano, and Lola. They designed puzzles, games and comics, in addition to wonderful illustrations of stories." (Itsik Gottesman, University of Texas). Cover illustrator Dan Rico (1912-1985) "was an American paperback novelist, screenwriter, wood engraver and comic book writer-artist, who co-created the Marvel Comics characters the Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) with plotter Stan Lee and artist Don Heck; Jann of the Jungle with artist Arthur Peddy; Leopard Girl with artist Al Hartley; and Lorna the Jungle Girl with an artist generally considered to be Werner Roth. His pen names include Dan Rico, Donella St. Michaels, Donna Richards, Joseph Milton, and N. Korok" (Wikipedia). SUBJECT(S): Children's literature, Yiddish -- Periodicals.
