A collection of 14 ghost stories chosen by Roald Dahl out from the 749 supernatural tales he read at the British Museum whilst working to develop an American television programme that would feature dramatisations of some of the stories. A pilot written by Dahl based on E. F. Benson's 'The Hanging of Alfred Wadham' was filmed but never released due to concerns that it would offend the American Catholic Church. The stories include 'W.S.' by L. P. Hartley (1952); 'Harry' by Rosemary Timperley (1955), 'The Corner Shop' by Lady Cynthia Asquith (1926); 'In the Tube' by E. F. Benson (1922); 'Christmas Meeting' by Rosemary Timperley (1952); 'Elias and the Draug' by Jonas Lie (1902); 'Playmates' by A. M. Burrage (1927); 'Ringing the Changes' by Robert Aickman (1955); 'The Telephone' by Mary Treadgold (1955); 'The Ghost of a Hand' by Sheridan Le Fanu (1863); 'The Sweeper' by A. M. Burrage (1931); 'Afterward' by Edith Wharton (1910); 'On the Brighton Road' by Richard Barham Middleton (1912); 'The Upper Berth' by Francis Marion Crawford (1885).
