"No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth!" - Earth First! Earth First! is a group of radical environmentalists that formed in the American Southwest in the spring of 1980, founded by Dave Foreman, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, Bart Koehler, and Ron Kezar, among others. Earth First! quickly came to national attention with their "cracking" of Glen Canyon Dam activist stunt, which was performed and filmed in the spring of 1981. Edward Abbey is considered to be the "literary father" of the group, and the monkey wrench is their ever-present emblem and tool. "Earth First! is the beginning of the new, bold environmental movement. And 'Earth First! The Radical Environmental Journal' is its voice" (Dave Foreman, 1980s). The late-1980s and early-1990s were a tumultuous time for Earth First! Law enforcement cracked down on its members, and various internal issues and factions began to form within the group. Earth First! embraced non-hierarchical structures and organic methods of organization and growth, while continuing to focus on direct action in defense of wilderness as its primary focus. Through the 1990's, 2000's, and 2010's, the journal continued to be published in various forms under the direction of a diverse and rotating collective of voices from within the broad Earth First! movement. Regular print publication of the Earth First! Journal under this title seems to have ceased sometime in the early 2020s, though the movement still survives and maintains a presence online and on social media. Roadshow" and corresponds with the feature article (on page 13) "Gearing Up for the EF! Roadshow." The present collection, from his papers, is an interesting assemblage of ephemeral items, casting light on British Army practices at the time of the Boer War. Nineteen items. In fair condition, with some signs of age and wear. ONE: Duplicated… orders in mimeograph of handwriting. Titled: 'Depôt Battalion | Orders for Reservist Companies passing through'. At end: 'By order | B St Clair-Ford Captain | Adjutant Depôt Battalion' and 'Green Point | 1st August 1902.' 2pp., folio. He describes his 'parade for marching away', adding 'Previous to parading O C Reservist Coys will see that the tents or huts that have been occupied by their men are handed over Clean.' [Washington, D.C.], Commander TF…-43, US Naval Support Force, Antarctica, A detailed set of logistical plans for the US International Geophysical Year operations in Antarctica. Initiated by polar veteran Lieutenant Richard Byrd, Operation Deep Freeze I was the US contribution to the International Geophysical Year, a science-driven global research project that included participants from sixty-seven countries. This official report appears to have been produced for internal circulation within the US Navy, and includes letters signed by Rear-Admiral George Dufek, Commander of Task Force 43 and "ComNavSuppFor Antarctica." Dufek was technically retired from the Navy in 1955 following decorated service in WWII and the Korean War, but continued on active duty so he could participate in Operation Deep Freeze. The plans include specifications for the establishment of four American base stations, plus auxiliary outposts, extensive lists of materials and equipment, procedural protocol for personnel, maps and other operations plans. Amongst many specific instructions there is an illustrated note about mooring alongside the ice shelf with the use of a "dead man" - a kind of anchor created from a plank of wood deliberately frozen into the bay ice.
