An early edition, the first edition was published c.1870, and one of many described as 'Books For The Country, priced 1s.' 12 b.w. engraved plates, Plate 1 serves as the frontispiece, the remaining plates are bound together at the back of the book, many b.w. text illustrations of moths and detailed line diagrams throughout. pp.154, publisher's catalogues printed on both front and rear paste-downs, free end-papers and lower cover. Intended as an introduction for the young Entomologist and is a selection of the moths most likely to be found, with a figure and description of each. Paper covered boards with coloured illustration of Emperor Moth among poppies, spine with title somewhat darkened. Off-setting from front and rear endpapers to page opposite, some minor spotting to frontispiece and title page, otherwise contents clean with no markings. Binding firm with slight crack at top and bottom of hinge. Covers have very little wear. A very good example of an early uncoloured copy. Size 12mo.
