/ Words & music by Vernon T. Stevens. Cover: Sung by Rev. Frank W. Gorman (The Singing Parson) at Fuller's Vaudeville Theatres. Melbourne : L.F. Collin Pty. Ltd., [c.1920]. Series: Collin's popular sixpenny edition. Folio, front cover with photographic portrait of Frank Gorman and original owner's name 'Vera Bangs' (light foxing… and edge tears), 3 pp, music notation (arrangement for voice and piano). Rev. Frank W. Gorman was an American religious minister from Oregon who toured Australia in 1920. The following article was publishedin The Advertiser (Adelaide), 16 February 1920: 'REV. FRANK W. GORMAN.THE SINGING PARSON.The first thing that strikes one about theSinging Parson (the Rev. Frank WalterGorman), who opened for a season at theMajestic Theatre on Saturday, is the intensely practical nature of his religion. Hisideal is the personality of Jesus Christ forthe people as opposed to the Church's view.In an interview on Saturday morning Mr.Gorman said, 'My sermons are likely toscare people, as also is my theology, butthere is nothing rude, nothing coarse, nothing gross in it. It is a plain heartspoken message to the soul of the listenerwith a punch in it to send it home. Ifpeople come to listen to me who are afraidof home truths they had better stay away.I don't want to frighten people, but I dowant to straighten out the Church, andyou know it does sorely need straighteningout in every direction. In far too manychurches the man of means has pitched histent, and by his donation to the pastor'ssalary, his contributions in costly carpets, pipe organs and brilliant chandeliers, hassilenced the voice of the man who shouldstand in the pulpit as the Oracle of God.I went into vaudeville work because I amnaturally an artist and because theChurch didn't pay a living wage. Now thatI am being paid a salary by the largetheatrical combine which enables meto live comfortably I can preach andmake no charge for doing so, and at thesame time I am independent of everybodyin the giving out of the Master's greatmessage to them. I believe, and believeintensely, in a religion of the streets, fora heaven beyond the stars is too far awayfor the majority of people to enjoy.Heaven and hell are states here and now.I am English born, my native placebeing Plymouth, and yet from infancy Ihave always been American.'Mr. Gorman began to preach at the ageof 14 years at Botus Fleming, in Cornwall. Some 'time afterwards he read Paine's'Age of Reason' and a book on the 'Immaculate Conception of Christ,' and hewas driven to agnosticism and lost faith. For six years he criticised sermons andlooked for discrepancies in the Bible, until September 13, 1906, when light came tohim and the following Saturday night hewas preaching on the streets.' Scarce. The National Library of Australia holds the only copy of this sheet music recorded in Australian collections.

3 pp, 4to. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of stub adhering to the blank reverse of second leaf. The year 1832 has been added in pencil in a contemporary hand. The letter is on paper watermarked 1831. Docketed at head 'Braybrooke Ld.' He begins by informing Henslow that Lord Grenville has lent him 'the B…ook in which his Notes upon the growth of Trees, during many years, had been made. He assures me that nothing worth your notice will be found among the MS remarks, but I am not of that opinion. Ld G is however very fond of the book as of an old acquaintance, & the entries if once lost can never be replaced, as no other Copy exists.' He feels 'very responsible' for the volume, but does not 'hesitate to entrust it to you knowing that you will lock it up & return it by a safe messenger'. The Braybrookes are 'stationary' at Audley End, and will be happy to see Henslow, if he wishes to return the volume in person. 'I have also a large specimen of lilac wood at your service, should you not have one already.' He is enclosing 'a paper which I copied from a loose MS document in my Evelyn's Sylva'. He ends the letter with a report of the fruit-bearing properties of Dr Clarke's mulberry tree: 'the indented leaves were also all on the lower part of the tree only, those above being all apparently of the common species'. In a postscript he reports that he has 'received no answer from Mr Blackie about the pruning system, perhaps he is afraid of entering the lists with you Cambridge Professors! ! !' The Prime Minister William Wyndham Grenville (1759-1834), Baron Grenville, planted at least 2500 trees at Dropmore House, and at the time of his death his pinetum contained the largest collection of conifer species in Britain.

FIRST EDITION. 225 x 133 mm. (8 7/8 x 5 1/4"). 1 p.l., lviii, 416 pp. Pleasing contemporary midnight blue straight-grain morocco, covers framed by plain gilt rules outlining Greek key and palmette blind rolls, raised bands, compartments with central gilt fleuron radiating densely blind-tooled foliage, gilt-ruled turn-ins, all ed…ges gilt; WITH AN EXCELLENT FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF DOVER CASTLE. A PRESENTATION COPY, with (slightly foxed) signed autograph letter bound in opposite title (with letter offsets): "The Author / begs Mr. E. S. Stephenson's / acceptance of this Volume / as a token of his / friendship and esteem. / R. S." Front pastedown with unidentified armorial bookplate. Full list of subscribers including addenda. âA bit of wear to corners and joints, a very small (ink?) stain to edge of preliminary leaves visible at upper left background of fore-edge painting (not affecting primary image), otherwise a fine copy, clean and fresh internally in a lustrous binding. This is a decorative binding highlighted by an atmospheric fore-edge scene of Dover Castle painted by a skilled artist. The view depicts a cottage along a country road in the foreground, with Dover Castle looming in the background against a hazy sky; a small figure, presumably the cottage owner, stands right of center. The scene is well designed, with the eye moving from the cottage and castle towers at left toward the sea at the far right, the foreground landscape's more saturated color anchoring the composition. Of particular note is how this foregound, contrasted with the background's washed color, creates the illusion of perspective. Despite the (light) browns and greens at the bottom of the scene, the painting is essentially gray and particularly tranquil as a result. The skill of the painter here is seen most notably in his delicate and subtle shading, a challenge that defeats even very able practitioners of the fore-edge painting. As always, the dating of the painting is difficult, but we think that it was done much closer to the time of publication than to the present day. Our author, the Rev. Robert Stevens, was a celebrated speaker who ultimately rose to become the head of the chapter of canons at Rochester Cathedral.
