Zustand: Fair. 1849. 576 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt decoration and lettering. Front endpaper has been removed. Rough cut pages are lightly tanned and thumbed at the edges, with creased corners and foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards have been moderately rub worn. Noticeable shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a little frayed Spine ends are crushed, with noticeable splits and chips. Light wear to unclipped dust jacket with tears, nicks and creases to spine, edge and corners.

More prominent to text block edges, pastedowns and free endpapers. Moderate cracking to gutters, exposing netting and causing some looseness to binding but pages remain attached. Boards have minor corner bumping and edgewear with mild tanning and scuffing overall. Mild splitting to joints. Spine has heavier tanning with soft crushing to ends. Lettering remains bright and clear. Book has a slight forward lean.

Full black leather binding with gilt decoration to the edges and gilt titles. Leather bookplate to the inside board with the name "Frances Smallbone" The black leather is clean, but is rubbed to the edges of the spine, with some loss of surface colour here. Inside the book is clean and tidy throughout, with no particular flaws. Cumming was a Scottish minister, part of the Scottish National Church based in Covent Garden. His theology is firmly Protestant. "It is thus that God still acts in history, and that all men are agents, consciously or unconsciously executing his purposes." vi, [ii], 156. pp.

No Binding. Zustand: Very Good. First. A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of the Rev John Cumming (1807 - 1881), with the caption "The End of the World". Accompanied by a one page biographical sheet. Cumming predicted Judgement Day for some time between 1848 and 1867.
