State of eps suggest book has been stood in water at some point as up to 1" damp marking around edges. Foxing spots to both sides of frontis, declining over first half dozen pages leaving rest of book mainly clean and firm. 464pps then a list of bible texts referenced, plates and Kelly's ad. All five plates affected by foxing spots and have tanned the facing pages. Some text pages also tanned.

Smooth spine divided into six panels by gilt double fillets and blind pallets, lettered in the second and numbered in the fourth, the others with a gilt flower-head and blind fronds and fleurons, the edges of the boards tooled with a gilt broken fillet, the turn-ins with a gilt roll, marbled endleaves, gilt edges. (Spines a little rubbed). First published in 1746 and frequently thereafter. Some light spotting or foxing, but a distinguished copy, belonging to Edward Bligh, Lord Clifton. Born in 1795, he attended Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford and served as MP for Canterbury from 1818 until 1830. He was styled as Lord Clifton until 1831, when he succeeded his father as 5th Earl of Darnley. He was Lord Lieutenant of Co. Meath from 1831 until his death in 1835. The Darnley family seat of Cobham Hall in Kent was sold in 1955.

Every plate has a 5 or 6 page description along with some poetry by well known poets. This is the nicest copy we have ever run across. Boards are tight and no interior problems at all. There is a letter in the front saying it came from a western museum deaccession.

First published in 1746, James Hervey"s devotional work reflects on mortality, nature, and divine providence through a series of poetic essays.The book consists of two main parts: 'Meditations among the Tombs', which contemplates death and the afterlife, and 'Reflections on a Flower-Garden', which draws religious lessons from nature.Illustrated with a frontispiece and two engraved plates. Collated, complete.Rebacked, in a full reverse calf binding.Hervey had a lasting impact on art through William Blake, who was an admirer of his, and influenced Blake's poem 'The Tyger'.Published in the civil parish of Burslem, Stoke on Trent, in the early 19th century by Tregortha, a major figure in the book trade of the region, and provided printing and binding services. He printed about eighty-one books and pamphlets, many of a religious nature between 1796 and his death in 1821. Rebacked, in a full reverse calf binding. Loss to head of fore edge of front board. Fully bound in original calfskin leather, with gilt decorations and lettering, red leather spine label. (Boards heavily worn all over and rubbed at edges, with leather cracked and frayed at corners and spine points and joints). Previous owner's inscription on front paste down endpaper, dated 1817 and on half title page. Pages mildly spotted in places, worn at edges, some creasing and corner curls, first few pages fragile in binding. Hervey was Rector of the Weston-Favell parish in Northamptonshire; the content of his meditations and contemplations with largely devotional literature but none the less also an interesting insight into his life and times. It is particularly notable for his tract vindicating the prophecy of Noah, in response to Lord Bolingbroke's earlier expose. 8vo.

Boards are rubbed and scuffed, especially on edges and joint, with some minor leather loss at spine ends, rubbed right through on corners. Rear panel of volume to slightly loosened. Ex lending library volumes with bookplate and barcode on front endpapers, leading sheet and pocket on rear endpapers, minor annotations and small stamp on copyright pages (no other library markings). Previous owner's (Charlotte Scott?) name stamped on page one of both volumes. There's some spotting and foxing on the first and last few leaves of both volumes, and a little spotting on the rear of some of the plates else generally internally neat and clean. James Hervey (1714-1758) was an English writer and clergyman. Although influenced by Wesley and the Oxford Methodists, he remained a committed Calvinist. Mediations and Contemplations was his first published work, first appearing in 1746 with many further editions appearing in his lifetime. Said to be modelled on Robert Boyle's Occasional Reflections on Various Subjects (1665) but Hervey's style is more bombastic and revealing of both simple piety and a genuine appreciation of natural beauty.

10 full page color plates by Isaac Sprague, 12.75 x 10", gilt-lettered pict cloth, unpaginated, covers quite worn/stained, soiled and darkened, extremities bumped and fraying, hinges loose, inner hinges cracking, pp toned but complete and intact with the ten lovely, bright botanical prints (Arethusa, Shortia, Arrow-Head, Hay-Scented Fern, Blue-Stemmed Golden-Rod, Fringed Gentian, Mountain Fringe, Arrow-Leaved Violet, Calopogon, and Spinulose).

Copyright page has an 1885 copyright date, title page with 1899. Forest green linen over boards, title printed in white onto upper board and spine, top edge stained green, 4to (11-1/4 inches tall), pp. unpaginated [89 with 90 being a blank], illustrated with ten tissue-guarded color plates and each flower in turn followed by it's own accompanying text. Volume with an occasional spot of finger soil to text, light offset to eps from DJ flaps and to pre-title from a once inserted card, some show through to plate versos, old price in pencil to ffep, a stray pin head sized bit of green top edge stain to fore-edge and one tissue guard noted with two tiny holes. Unclipped DJ is toned with minor chips and small closed tears. Box is well worn but complete, with stains, a single corner split to upper half and a pencil note to outside lower half "Gift from Aunt Emma", also loosely inserted is a small piece of paper with "? from Aunt Emma" written in pencil. An uncommon flower plate book when found in this condition, especially so with it's original dust jacket and publisher's gift box.
