Has a typo on the translator name. Every other edition has the translator as "George Fyler Townsend", but this edition has the author as "Rev. Geo. Tyler Townsend, M.D.". All original plates are intact. Book has an additional book after page 224 "One Hundred Picture Fables with Rhymes" by Otto Speckter. This particular edition appears to be very scarce. "The Arabian Nights' Entertainments: A New Edition, revised, with Notes" is a historically significant 19th-century compilation edited by the Rev. George Fyler Townsend. First published around 1866 by Frederick Warne & Co. in London, this translation has remained a collectable classic for enthusiasts of world folklore and antique literature. Townsend primarily based his version on the English translation by Dr. Jonathan Scott. He selected it because it was more accurate than Antoine Galland's French translation, yet less verbose and abstruse than Edward Lane's highly academic version. As an Anglican clergyman, Townsend revised the text to make it suitable for a broad Victorian audience. He added explanatory notes and prefaces clarifying Middle Eastern and South Asian cultural customs. The spine and paper label are lightly sunned, some of the pages have been slightly roughly opened, but all are supple, whole, and clean, otherwise fine; the volume is unmarked, the text block is tight and square, the hinges are strong, and the covers are entirely undamaged.
