'In Memoriam' is a requiem for Arthur Henry Hallam, a friend of Tennyson's who died in 1833 after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage. It is generally considered to be one of Tennyson's best lyrical works, and to be one of the best poems of the nineteenth century. It was one of Queen Victoria's favourite poems. Alfred Tennyson was the Poet Laureate for most of Queen Victoria's reign, securing great success during his lifetime.
