In den WarenkorbHardback. Zustand: Very Good Plus. Second Edition. No stated date c1855. Presumed second edition. vii, 139, [ii], 436pp., frontispiece and 7 plates (including a list of Martyrs), and tail piece illustrations. The Bass Rock is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, situated approximately 1 mile offshore, and 3 miles north-east of North Berwick. The rock is uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and the site of an important castle, which after the Commonwealth period was used as a prison. The island belongs to Sir Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, whose family acquired it in 1706, and before to the Lauder family for almost six centuries. This book is a study of the Bass Rock, written by four respected authors. It starts with a History of the Bass by Thomas M'Crie (1797-1875), a Presbyterian minister and church historian; this is followed by an account of the Geology of the Bass by Hugh Miller (1802-1856), the famous Scottish geologist and writer; there is then a fascinating section on the Martyrs of the Bass (historical notices of 39 prisoners confined on the Bass) by James Anderson. The book closes with notices of the natural history of the rock - zoology by Professor John Fleming and botany by Professor John H. Balfour. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a blind stamped illustration of the Bass Rock on both boards. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some scattered but mostly light foxing, including some marks on the frontispiece and title-page. The plate facing page 409 and a few pages near the start and end of the book are moderately affected. There is a personal name stamp on the front free endpaper. At the time of listing there is some Bass related ephemera loosely inserted at the front of the book.

Unbound. Zustand: Very Good. An archive of material related to a slander suit brought by African-American minister and *Roanoke Tribune* publisher Rev. Fleming Emory Alexander against local Black leaders who called for his censure. The papers consist of typescripts and carbons of varying sizes, along with related newspaper clippings. Overall very good or better with typical light edgewear and toning. Alexander was a veteran of World War I who attended Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg. In 1939 he founded the *Roanoke Tribune*, a weekly newspaper for the Black community of Western Virginia that promoted self-esteem and respect for others. Despite being a staunch Democrat, Alexander embraced the notion of integration following the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling, putting him at odds with many of the politicians he had helped to elect. This archive consists of papers related to his suit against The Commonwealth Citizens Association (CCA) of Roanoke, a group of Black civic-minded residents who objected to a series of editorials Alexander penned in the fall of 1956. While the pieces were progressive for a life-long Democrat, their go-slow approach to integration were too conservative for the CCA, who published an editorial in several competing newspapers questioning Alexander's character. Eventually the case was settled out of court with the CCA agreeing to issue a public apology and pay damages of $3,750. The materials here come from a lawyer who defended the CCA. Included are two copies of a statement from CCA member Cordelia Williams (her handwritten copy and a typed version on CCA stationery); three copies of the agreement reached between Alexander and the CCA; a statement of the financial payments made by CCA members in early 1958; a copy of a letter sent from one lawyer to another commenting on the case; a list of readers who canceled their subscription to the *Roanoke Tribune*; several newspaper clippings; and an unconnected committee report from 1955. An interesting archive revealing the division in Black communities following the Brown v. Board of Education Ruling.
