Arnold adopted Joseph A. C. Pray, to raise as his own. Young Joseph refused to cooperate in his spelling lesson, for which Arnold thrashed him with rods, but failing that, used a broken horsewhip. This work is Rev. Arnold's defense of his actions toward the obstinate youth. Arnold was indicted and tried before the Superior Court of New Hampshire.
