'This Spanish Colonial document concerning the Tarascan Indians of the state of Michoacán in west-central Mexico is to be ranked with such works as the Books of Chilam Balam of Yucatán in revealing the history and nature of the inhabitants of Mexico prior to the Spanish Conquest. Now published for the first time in English, the book was originally titled the Relación de las ceremonias y ritos y poplación y gobernación de los indios de la provincia de Mechuacán. This document, the primary source for the study of Tarascan prehistory, was written between 1539 and 1541, presumably by Spanish Friar Martín de Jesús de la Coruña, from the oral traditions of the Tarascans. The author personally presented the original manuscript to Viceroy Don Antonio de Mendoza on his second visit to the city of Michoacán (Tzintzuntzan) in 1541, an event recorded by an Indian artist in a drawing which is one of forty-four illustrations taken from the original manuscript in the Escorial in Madrid, Spain, and keyed to the text. The Chronicles of Michoacán describes the customs of the Indians, the gods they worshiped, their religious rites and social classes, the feasts and administration of justice, and their calendar and the reckoning of time. Superstitions and auguries, wars and conspiracies among the Indian tribes, and the wars of the Conquest are recounted. The principal god, Cazonci, receives special attention, as well as the 'Masters' -leaders-of the Tarascans. The origin of the Tarascans remains an enigma of ancient Mexico. Since no pre-Conquest codices or historical records exist for Michoacán, this book is especially significant, for it enters into a neglected area by bringing to an English-speaking audience an excellent examination of the Tarascans and their culture. The editors have included a map of Michoacán, a glossary of terms and a glossary of the gods, a list of Tarascan feasts, and suggested readings. A valuable source for scholars and an absorbing document for everyone interested in pre-Columbian Indians of Mexico.' (From the DJ flap).
