Although the method of selection is naturally colored by my likes and dislikes, I believe I have done justice to every major topic covered within the sermons. Three of the sermons in this collection (2, 17, and 29 [PL 385 364 340]) are now attributed to St. Caesar of Arles (ca. 470-542). Their legitimacy in a collection of St. Augustine's sermons can be defended by the fact that St. Caesar, who was an heir to antiquity's liberal view of plagiarism, appropriated these sermons from St. Augustine, merely adding his own exordium or conclusion or changing a word here and there.' Numerous color and B&W plates. Comes with a letter about the book by Harry Peters, dated 1936. In it he recounts an amusing story about the first print in the book. Condition is VERY GOOD+ ; covers very clean, no wear at all to edges. The covers have a touch of bowing, due I believe more to the size and weight of the book than from wear. Binding tight and text/plates spotless. The original gray DJ is FAIR ; torn with numerous tape repairs. The original slipcase is very good - some wear and scuffing to surface, wear at edges, but no loss or splits. The copy number is inked on the lower end. A very nice copy with a signed letter. Art. Leo Stein (May 11, 1872 - July 29, 1947) was an American art collector and critic. He was born in Allegheny City (now in Pittsburgh), the older brother of Gertrude Stein. He became an influential promoter of 20th-century paintings. Beginning in 1892, he studied at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, for two years. The following year, he traveled the world with his cousin, Fred. In 1897, he transferred to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1898. Stein spent a number of years living in Paris with his sister. In 1914, the two split due to Leo's resentment of Gertrude's infatuation with Alice B. Toklas, whom he described as "a kind of abnormal vampire". Stein returned to America to work as a journalist but eventually settled near Florence, Italy, with his long-time love interest, Nina Auzias. Leo shared with his sister, Gertrude Stein, the Paris apartment that became a meeting place for the famous. Reflected in Appreciation: Painting, Poetry and Prose are their early years as American expatriates as well as their later estrangement. This book includes his reminiscences and estimates of Picasso, Matisse, Cézanne, and Renoir, among others, as well as his considered views on the place of art and literature in everyday life.
