The book, which was the twenty-second of the series, was first published in 1955, with a revised edition in 1964 (this edition), and another in 1980. There were five different jacket designs over this period. Fully illustrated with 16 plates in colour and 48 in monochrome plus line drawings within the text. ***Near fine in pale-blue cloth-covered boards with dark-blue titles to the spine and front board. The covers are clean and unmarked. No creases or tears. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges nice and clean. No reading lean to the binding. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with no inscriptions, but please note that in the margin of p.50 a previous owner has marked a paragraph with an inked 'X'. All volumes in generally very good condition, some are slightly pushed at spine ends, most have a little dust marking to the upper text block edge, and some have a previous owner's name or inscription internally, else are neat, clean bright and tight. All in illustrated dust wrappers, some lightly bumped on extreme edges, some price clipped and almost all a little shelf worn and sunned, faded on the spine. All three are various printings of revised editions from 1967-1970. Observer's Pocket books is a series of pocket-sized books published by Frederick Warne and covering topics such as hobbies, art, nature and history. The first in the series - British Birds - was published in 1937. The 99th title, the Observer's Book of Observer's Books was released in 1999 (by Peregrine Books) in a matching format. The series was rounded to 100 with the publication of Wayside and Woodland in 2003.
