Zustand: Very good. - Four typed paragraphs filling half of a sheet of his personalized 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide letterhead with his name printed at the top and with the printed Woodstock, NY address crossed out and replaced by a typed New York City address. Signed "Ref". The top corners of the letter are lightly creased with a light paperclip mark at top left. Folded twice for mailing with 2 additional light horizontal creases. Very good. Refregier writes to progressive educator Harold Rugg about a proposed visit to Columbia University to talk about his work: "I am planning to bring along color slides of my easle [sic] paintings and murals and a 16 mm film of the San Francisco murals. Naturally, I would like to share my experiences, such as the work in architecture, and, perhaps, there could be some possibility of arranging an informal evening at the University or some other place." He also writes about his interest in Puerto Rican art and his plan to visit Puerto Rico.Anton Refregier [1905-1979] was a painter and muralist active in Works Progress Administration Federal Art Project commissions and in teaching art. The blockprints were produced over a period of ten years - 1950 to 1959. They were originally designed for use as New Year's greetings to friends. Staining, scuffing and some age wear on binding. Head and tail of spine slightly chipped. Tight copy with binding in fair, interior in very good condition. Translated, adapted and arranged by Walter Lowenfels. The title "Song of Peace" and the verses which form the refrain of Section 1 are from a poem by Vitêzlav Nezval. Issued as a Christmas card by Refregier and his family, the yellow card folds out to reveal a nice block print illustration of a girl playing a recorder at a dove. Evidence of mailing, just about fine. Refregier was a Russian immigrant painter and artist probably best known for work done for the Federal Art Project, especially his epic "History of San Francisco" painted in the Rincon Center in San Francisco.
